Damn tranny problem again...

Hi guys, I have put it to Tech Q/A section and maybe some of you (like Joe did) have some idea what it is...

Moving lever to R gear - doing yank....any idea?
Hi, I have just my tranny rebuild (it has on 1500km now) and there is something strange to me. If I move lever from whatever D,P, N to R there is strange yank (it seems nothing happend for a while and then yank and R gear go). I have feeling that it is more connected with AWD than with tranny (it sounds more mechanic than tranny issue) . When it was just rebuild there were no such a yanks. It is also more noticable when the car is parked downhill or uphill than it is quite hard to move the lever to R. It shifts from 1 to 4 with no problems, like new one.

Question is wheather it is related with tranny or AWD or has to be something adjusted.... Thanx for any info, I have still half year warranty but do not want to let my car month or more at tranny shop..

Peter, it could be several things:

They may not have bolted the transmission in well when they reinstalled it, causing it to "droop" and misalign with the rear end.

Perhaps the rear tranny mounts are shot and they did not notice it.


Those are just a couple of things I thought of, off the bat.

When parking on a hill, set your parking break BEFORE putting the car in P -- this will keep the strain off the tranny.

At any rate, you should take it back to the shop while you still have a warranty. Get it sorted before it causes MORE problems.

Joes suggests it has one of these problems:

- Lengthy time, N to R is valve sticking.

- Shock felt, N to R is valve sticking, or faulty 4a accumulator or bad ATF.

- Of the other two, both symptoms you mention indicate sticking valve, so this is the prime candidate.

-For the long delay engaging R, it also suggests "low and reverse brake slipping or seized" This can't be checked without the gearbox out.

As I recall it had did the same before it died. It did it even moving to D.
But after it was rebuild for a month there were no problem it occured for a first time week ago. I thought that there is someting wrong with propel shaft (maybe some bearing or some clearance somewhere in rear weels drive) but when I all put together it is probably tranny problem (if there is someting wrong outside tranny which was not repaired it would behave like before rebuild). As I said for a month there was no problem.
Thanx for any other idea.

PS: I am so upset so I went to my local dealer and borrowed Impreza STI for a couple of hours to clear my mind:-)
Only this car could satisfied me now (maybe XJ220 or Aston - but these two are only in my dream garage:-)))

So tranny is ok, they found out that there are bad four rubber parts at rear diff. which we call silent-block (I do not know english word for it...)¨

I think we call them "Tranny Mounts" -- but, whatever works. Glad it's okay!
