It depends on the algorithm used. I have great success with "MP3 Blade" algorithm at 44.1K and 320Kbps

I have my entire CD collection ripped to MP3. It takes up over 40GB of space. Its great to be able to access it from anywhere in the house.

I have used Blade, but man that sucker is slow to compress. I've been using Lame for the past couple years and, ripping to 192, I've been very happy with the results. Now, I only listen to those MP3s at work on a pair of semi-decent headphones. If I were to take the files home and listen to them on my nice speakers, I might hear something that bothered me. But on my headphones, 192 sounds great.

I always rip at 128 because I honestly can't tell the difference between 128 and 192, although I can tell between 128 and 320. I find that 320 just takes too long and takes up too much space.

Try Spin Doctor for ripping Vinyl to Digital. It removes all the snap, crackle, and pops.

I bought my dad a CD Burner and a spindle of blank CD's a while ago. He has burned almost his entire Album collection (over 200 albums) to MP3 and CD.

That's my plan . . . when I can get around to it. I've got about 300 albums (of which I paid for approximately . . . 5. The rest are stamped "For Promotional Use Only" and contain a bunch of first issues). I fear, however, that I'll need to buy a new external H/D first. My 12 gig on my home unit is almost full already.

Forget the external, I'd recommend replacing your internal 12Gig with a 120, 160 or 200GB hard drive and replacing your CD burner with a DVD burner. If you shop, you should be able to get a 120 and a DVD burner for a few bucks more than an external drive.

Then you can not only rip everything, but also backup 4.7GB worth of data at a time in case you crash.

Bring your computer to Reading and we will get it all sorted out for you

Doug

Yeah, I agree. I paid about $100 for a 120GB Barracuda a few months ago...well worth upgrading.

Of course, I only bought it to copy all my data to from the office before I was laid off...I don't actually have a modern-enough PC at home to put it in. So it sits in a box.

Trouble is, I don't think my Compaq 5665 will partition a larger drive (or so they say). I know of some people who have jumped through hoops to configure an 80 gig, but, larger than that, I don't know. I'll have to do some research.

Your computer should be able to handle the larger drives, however, you may need to use a program like Disk Manager (or whatever the manufacturter includes) to partition it.

BTW, Ripping CD's/tracks using iTunes SUCKS!!!

I knew some windows zealot would post something like this. Yes, you windows guys can do almost anything... HOWEVER, its the difference between driving a fast modded neon down a mountain road and an SVX in good condition. They both do the same thing, but one has much more quality, integrity, and elegance in the way it achieves the same goal. Give iTunes a try, you won't regret it.

Remember this when I make the following comment. I do have a imac g3 sitting around and I have OSX.2

Macintoshes are good in some areas. So are windows. I still believe that opensource OSes such as Linux will eventually gain more market share and will even things out give or take another 20 years (plus or minus 5 years).

For stable system, I will pick any *nix system(that include OSX). For software, I'd go with windows.

I personally picked up an old PDA running on MIPS 133 MHz a couple of days ago. It currently runs on WINCE HPC Pro. I will get it to run NetBSD in a couple of days if I can find some time. Why? Because I can.

ps. did you guys read an article about apple creating a cluster faster than the current x86 clusters we have today?
