Half shaft removal.

yester day my friend and I was tring to remove the driver side half shaft, we took the pin out, hub bolt off, and the top strut bolt off, and losened the lower one, but still the half shaft dident have enoungh room to slide out. I took off some half shafts on 1 gen legacys and they cam out pretty easy after you tilted the hub. Do you just have to try really hard, or is there a better way to take off the half shaft.

if i remember correctly (i've done two of these), it takes a little work to get the shaft out.. you might need to try to compress it.. wiggle it around... just be careful not to damage the wheel bearing.. or whatever that is..

No No No No The bolts for the strut say in, don't touch them and now that you did you need to get a WHEEL alignment. There is a lot of info on this in the threads on this site. Try a search. Beav has recommended removing the three bolt that hold the lower ball joint and YES the sway bar gets disconnected at the strut. Na dif you find the one thread where the person jacked under the lower A arm, do not do the same thing.

I just changed one on my 5-speed, and I didn't take anything loose other than the wheel, the axle nut and the roll pin.

After removing the pin and the axle nut, I could slide the inner joint off, then raise the inner one up till the knuckle side slide out, then worked it out after turning the knuckle (rotor and all)in at the front side.
Took about 10 minuted to remove and 10 minutes to put back.
But I haven't tryed this on an auto, as the auto tranny IS larger and may not allow the inner joint to slide off. ...but it might

i removed one of the lower two bolts on the strut, to let the hub slide out, i dont see how i will need to get a wheel aliment after that, because the bolt only goes back through at one point, were i took it out at.

When I removed the front passenger side axle, the lower ball-joint was removed and the wheels were turned in the far opposite direction. The strut assembly was able to be pulled away from the axle and the axle removed. The lower a-frame had to be pulled down to slide the axle out. The axle had to be pulled towards the side rear of the car.

Just thought it might be similar for the drivers side.

The top bolt (of the 2 lower bolts), is excentric<sp?>, and is used to adjust the alignment of the front end, so if you didn't mark the position and put it back right where it was, your alignment will be off.

I'm glad it's working out for you
I like to see people learn to work on thier cars.
It's a good feeling to do it yourself (Plus....it's cheaper too )

I work on my SVX to save money and for the thrill of it all. I want to say that all you have to do is "ask around here" and you will get answers. The answers you need.

The alignment on our AWD Astro was just done. It needed 3 new ball joints and I was very happy to have the shop do this work. The ball joints were original with factory rivets. That is beyound what I like to do. When I picked up the Astro I asked how it went? They had to air chisel off the rivets and heat up the joints with a torch. If I had attempted this work myself I would have not finished or taken a lot longer than the 3 hrs it took the shop.

Take care.
