I was thinking about getting one of those cheap in dash lcds that are on ebay and hooking it up to a gps unit. Anyone have any experience in this?

I do. What kind of LCD and what kind of system are you talking about? You might want to check out mp3car.com forums for this info as well. There are a ton of people who can help you there as well.

Those cheap indash LCD only have composite in and they can only display 320x240 resolution. Your computer output a minium of 640x480 and often times at 800x600. So you have to scale the resolution down.

With GPS, you want to see clear street names and details. You will not get it with the 80 buck LCD. You need to save some money and get a VGA LCD for the car and with a touch panel, they will easily run you about 350-500 bucks.

You will need a computer and a GPS as well. Computer for the car on VIA M1000 with 800MHz processor will run you some $$. Hard drive, RAM etc.... more $

I am not trying to discourage you. I am just telling you that it will take some good cash to get a good system.

I have a piii600 laptop with 256mb ram. I'm planning on removing the screen and mounting it in the glove compartment.

The screen though... I was looking to spend around 350 or so for a decent screen. Doesn't have to be touch screen. I'll have everything setup so when I boot the system it'll go straight to where I want it. I was also thinking about hooking up a mini-keyboard, wireless perhaps.

I have a pcmcia gps card already. So basically all I'm really looking for is the screen. I definitely want to an in dash one, that fits into the top deck... And yes, vga is a plus

Unless you are willing to remold the whole dash, it is not possiable. Open your CD cage. See the depth - as in how much your current CD player is recessed behind? You will not find any in-dash players that will fit into the SVX space.

Check out this site for a screen:
www.digitalww.com
Although you may not think it's important to have a touch screen interface, try to control your application while moving in your car. Mouse is pretty bad and so are the touch pads. I've tried them all.

If you want an interface, check out this thread:

www.Xenarc.com should be releasing an in dash 7" Flip out LCD monitor that takes RGB in and has a touch screen built in. It's supposed to sell for about $1000.

But....they've been sitting on it for quite some time so I don't know what the deal is with it.

It's not that hard to place an LCD in the radio's cage.....it's more just time consuming.

http://www.expertwebcreations.com/pe.../lcd_night.jpg

If you're good you can try rigging a Pioneer/Kenwood screen and rigging the external RBG. They all use they're propreitery equipment, HOWEVER the video signal they use is RGB.....not sure of the sync frequency. I've never had the money to try and play with an expensive screen but if you do, go for it

Good luck.

Oh - and there's always Alpine/Pioneer GPS units but it'll get costly

I do.

Xenarc and DigitalWW and DSCUstom all get their screens from the same source in HK, who get them from China. China production is delayed for the panasonic screens (new ones with 400nit). Gain screens with 200 nits are still there but they are being phased out. However, HK supplier just came up with replacement screens for them. They are the new Hitachi 400nit screens, just as good as the panasonic ones.

To keep the story short, Until the factory in China can start production on them, you will not see any motorised VGA screens. There are non motorized ones around though.

But NON of the motorised or non motorised screens will fit in the SVX since the head unit is recessed in about an inch or so and it will NOT clear the depth.

Wow 400-nit is just CRAZY. I hope it's got some sort of auto-dimming feature because that's great for sunlight but at night that screen will be brighter than HID headlamps.

The depth on the SVX didn't really look like it would be an issue when I took the cage out. But it could be possible.

I have a dimmer app written into the next release of my interface. 400 Nit is needed in the sun with a touch panel.

Many of us have tried to put the screen in the SVX and every one of them could not fit so far, Panasonic, Clarion, you name it.. it will hit the climate control when you open it up and your screen will be pointing down

This is what a 400 Nit screen looks like in the sun.

Edit: here we have photos of the old screen (xernac) vs the new liliput screen.
