EGR Port - What exactly is this?

I was looking through svx_commuter's locker for directions on how to test the ohms on the TPS, and I came across this picture labeled "EGR Cleaning Port":

I'd message him myself but his last activity was in 2009. Does anyone have an explanation as to what this does? Do I stick something in here and clear the EGR out with it? That would be fantastic!

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

I believe the egr valve lets in exhaust to mix in with the air intake for combustion. I believe it's to help reduce pollution.
If I remember correctly, you remove the cover to expose the bolts and remove it to clean. I did this when I removed the intake manifold to replace the vacuum lines. It was dirty with carbon, I used a small pick to scrap the inside to loosen it.
I am sure someone else can chime in with more information.

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

I hope so. I've been doing research for the last year trying to figure out an easy way to clean out the EGR without removing a ton of stuff... Also does anyone have a how-to on how to remove the EGR the hard way?

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

Do a search on intake manifold. There might be a write up about the EGR valve.

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve.

Its both an emissions device and had impact on volumetric efficiency under certain conditions.

Main function is to recirculate a small percentage of exhaust gas back into the combustion chambers at the "correct" engine load to reduce NOx (nitrogen oxide) gases. When working correctly (can be finicky on the SVX) it will not rob any power from the engine. When not working efficiently, it can have negative effects on fuel economy and power just to name a few. The higher combustion chamber temperatures actually help to break down and displace NOx formulations commonly considered a harmful pollution especially in urban cities.

Its only actually actuated in the mid-band area of the power curve, never at idle or full throttle.

There is much more to the science behind this, but I just deal with non-working EGR valves, compliance, and basic reasons behind function. Hope this helps a bit.

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

It does! Interesting how much one part can effect the whole car. But what exactly does that port do? Can one dump a cleaner in there and wash it out (seafoam)? Does one stick a pipe cleaner in it?

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

I live somewhere without emissions so i removed the pipe and stuck a bolt in both spots to block it off.

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

The bolt in the picture I believe is a plug. Non California or pre 96 models use this plug in place of an EGR sensor.

Re: EGR Port - What exactly is this?

Maybe these pictures can be of some help.
The bolt in the picture is not what the EGR actually plugs into. The EGR is a smaller pipe with a flange and 2 philips head screws holding it in place that are just about guaranteed to be stripped when you try to remove them. It is directly behind the top bolt that the picture points to.

I wasn't aware that you could clean the inside by removing that bolt - but it would be interesting to take it out and see.

Inside the tube will be a caked up mess.
