Angry Stalling in traffic

My 1992 Subaru SVX is constantly stalling in the middle of traffic. I will be driving down the road at any speed and the car just shuts off. There is no sputtering or shaking, it just shuts off. After I roll to a stop It starts right back up again. It is maddening because without the stalling the car accelerates and runs beautifully. I'm afraid I'm going to get rear ended on one of these stalling episodes in traffic. Help!!

Is the check engine light on?
check the how to documents for how to pull the codes http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?How-To|14264 - even if the CEL is not on you can pull up the stored codes to give us some more information. My first guess would be it is sensor related.

I had something similar, but mine was more at slow speeds. For me it turned out to be the MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor), but first pull the codes as suggested in the previous post to see what the problem is. If it is the MAF then check the HowTo documents (link at the top of the page) on cleaning the MAF.

It sure acts like a Mass Air Flow.

Sounds a lot like wiring trouble to me too.

For a car to cut out under load, which it would be while "driving at any speed", and subsequently restart OK, then it is not likely to be a fuel problem. Well, at least not a physical fuel problem, possibly the fuel pump has an intermittent fault, if it stopped temporarily, the car would stall.

Sounds more like ignition or something. Do your ignition lights come on in the dash when the car stalls?
