Something besides Tranny Weirdness.
I promised to keep everyone posted so here goes.
I spent the weekend taking the battery out of the '94 SVX trickle charging it, and cleaning the corrosion off everything. After charging the battery outside the car over night, it was still 'deader than a door nail' so I bought a new battery, yesterday morning. I also bought a new battery clamp at PEP Boys. It fits surprisingly well. I put everything back together and guess what; the car still would not start. All I get is "click-click" from the starter relay. It sounds like the relay is hanging-up. I guess I'll go under the car and give the relay a good whack tonight. Ouestions: Where is the starter motor? Is it on the bottom left or bottom right side of the engine? Is the bolted on, or part of the starter motor? Thanks for any help. Larry III

Tranny Weirdness
I did not mean to confuse anyone. I only have one cooler, the auxilliary one (B&M) hooked up. For all I know, the stock one in the bottom of the radiator may be plugged solid.
Futhermore, the tranny usually goes to OD after about 1 minute of expressway driving at speed (60-65 mph) in the mornings going to work. And this is with the car sitting out all night even in the cold of last winter.

Before you go hammering it [I know how you feel! ], just run a voltmeter across the new battery. It may be slightly down on charge. I have had no trouble with Plum, but the black car is a long time standing and the battery is due replacement. I find with both of them, it is very surprising how little below 12V they have to be before the click click business happens. Joe

Larry,
I just had a similar problem to yours. My car sat all weekend as I was visiting the folks. When I got on the expressway to drive home, the torque converter would not lock. I did not get it to lock for at least 10-15 miles and it only did so after I put it in neutral, revved it a few times, and put it back in 'D'. I was driving in '3' until I hit the highway. I wouldn't worry about replacing the tranny just yet. It may have just been a fluke and the fluid didn't warm up fast enough to drop into OD. Have the fluid run through the radiator does help with cold starts.

It's normal for the tranny to take 15 minutes to lock the TC when it's cold. (below freezing)
Mine took that long and I was only using the stock cooler in the radiator.

Too cold for comfort.
It's normally very mild here in Ireland. We don't get extreme low temperatures like you guys do.
Most of us SVXers have extra tranny coolers in the system to keep the oil from burning up in Summertime. The majority of us with extra coolers have them working along with the OEM radiator one. I would suspect that most of us use coolers rated 19000 lbs or over, for a car that weighs about 3500, or 4000 lbs laden. In really cold weather, the cooling capability we have put in is too good. It will not allow the ATF oil to reach optimum temperature, hence no 4th gear. My suggestion is to put some aluminium baking foil in front of the aux cooler, to stop the really cold ambient air from over-cooling the oil. Covering half of the area, or a little more, would be about right. Remember to take it off again when the weather warms up. Joe

OK, I'll ask again.
Can anyone tell me exactly where the strater motor is located in the enginge bay? Is it right rear or left (driver's side) rear of the engine. It is not in the shop manuals. I looked last night. Thanks.

Morning Larry,
Sorry about the lack of reply. Like you, I looked up the manual, it wasn't obvious, so I presumed someone with more knowledge would jump in and enlighten. Just looked at Black Betty. It's easy to get at. Looking into the engine bay, the starter motor is mounted high up on rhs facing forward into the TC casing.. It engages with the teeth of the torque converter. You will find it directly beneath the black reservoir for the cruise control vacuum operator. It connects into the TC casing right where the transmission serial number is listed. Joe

Saturday, I had the tranny flushed on my '92 SVX. The flush machine used the tranny to circulate the ATF. The bad news is that the ATF flowing thru the the sight glass of the machine looked black.
The good news is that the seals did not seem to leak. The tranny seems stronger though I have not driven it much. Tomorrow night when I come home from work in stop-and-go traffic will tell me if the tranny needs replacement. I'll keep everyone posted. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hey larry how did the fluid turn black if you have a cooler? How powerful is the cooler?

I had the tranny in my '92 flushed with synth. ATF and added synth. ATF After a week of driving to and from work here are my impressions. It is definitely slipping in 4th gear/OD when I accelerate. I am going easy on it. It also seems to be "ungumming" itself. It is acting like it was sticky and the more I run it the better it is, 'go figure'.
Next: I had Rosie's '94 towed into a dealership. The starter is dead . I'm having it replaced.
