don't flush, just dismantle, clean it up, and put it back. flushing can move dirt from one place to another.... or it can harm some materials inside the tranny.

On a low mileage SVX or one that's had its ATF changed regularly since new, you might get away with it. However, it's better to be safe than sorry! -Chike

The problem that occurs with flushing A/Ts with questionable service histories is that the soft parts (seals, o-rings, etc.) have hardened, the surfaces they ride against have accumulated a varnish that helps them seal and any disruption of these surfaces can lead to pressure leaks due to rinsing away their fragile relationships.
Most shops that provide these services know this and either refuse the job if it is questionable (and possibly a liability) or have the customer sign a waiver beforehand, stating that whatever happens will be your problem and your problem alone. Those shops that do neither usually just purchased their equipment and haven't been burned yet. My choice if it were mine? A '92 or '93 approaching 100,000 miles is in 'start saving your money now' territory. Drain and fill the trans and replace the external campaign filter if installed.

When you drain the trans you may only get 4-6 quarts of ATF (even though the trans holds 10). But draining it a couple of times will keep purifying the ATF in the trans. By the 3rd or 4th drain, your trans will have over 90%+ new ATF in it. -Chike

As others have touched on, the problem with flushing goes back to the history of the tranny, if it's working on very old fluid, or old burnt fluid, flushing might not be that great of an idea, even a drain and fill might not be that great of an idea. If your trans has always been taken care of and always serviced at the right intervals you should be fine with this flush.

On a similar note, I had my tranny replaced about 9 months and 20000 miles ago and was planning to drain/refill it pretty soon. Any suggestions on fluid? Or will any DexronII/Mercon fluid work fine?
