it's around 2.05 here for Premium. Anybody ever run 87 octane in an SVX, i've heard that it can ruin the engine, but my elders insist that the car doesn't really need the stuff and would be fine running 89 (mid-grade) gas?? any answers?

Twice I have accidentally run the car on 87 octane fuel. Both times I had problems with:
poor idle (surging)
stalling
occasional flashing of the check engine light
poor performance
poor milage

Thats my experience. I have however run it on 89 once with only losses in mileage and lesser than optimal performance.

And I must say that higher octane (around 96) can make it run better (I didnt say faster) in the 1/4 mile.

For those interested, TORCO unleaded race ruel additive works great. This is not some cheesy off the shelf octane booster. Expect to pay $22 for a 32 ounce bottle (do not get it on your paint). Other eason options are 10-20 percent mix of either Xylene or Toulene. You will pay about $5 a gallon for it at a paint supply store. Xylene is mildy better than Toulene. Also, do not get this on your paint. If anyone here is REALLY interested in octane mixes and performance, PM me and I will give you mix ratios, do's and donts, as well as several years worth of results running such fuels. Current research is Ethanol injection. Premium fuel is starting to cost WAY TOO MUCH and I can get Ethanol localy for much cheaper. Keep in mind Ethanol is roughly 101 octane.

Hey Chris, In my opinion, you should share your wealth of knowledge with all of us to help us all save a bit of money. That would be super.

Let me know how the research goes with ethanol.

This is why most elders are considered to be...well...

There's a little message on the dashboard and the fuel-filler door the reads UNLEADED PREMIUM FUEL ONLY. Pay attention to it! Could be it's there for a reason!

Fuel prices for premium in WV are at $2.16 last time I fueled ....

i'v heard that most cars that claim to require Premium don't actualy need it, but this all confuses me. Why do certain cars need premium and others don't??, i always thought it was simply for cars that need to burn the fule higher such as turbocharged and supercharged cars, but i'll just be honest and admit that i don't fully understand this..........

It all has to do with the tuning of the engine. The timing advance assumes combustion at a certain rate, and using a different octane will change that rate. This is one thing that causes detonation ("pinging"). The fuel does not combust properly because the timing advance makes the spark plugs fire at the inappropriate time for that specific octane's rate of combustion. With enough detonation, your internals will suffer from one type of damage or another.

There are also numerous other reasons why... Air/fuel ratio are no longer proper because the ECU assumes that you are using 91 instead of 87, fuel flow is ever so slightly different, the injectors spray ever so slightly different... Ultimately, it's all just a lot of very very minor changes in the way that your car runs that will harm your engine in the end.
