Unhappy Bad Day for the Twins

Yesterday, during an exchange with Nick, I said I was having a bad day. I was.

Patience had been giving a random CE light. I wasn't worried because I had ordered replacement O2 sensors some time ago. Lately, the light was coming on a short time after I left work, staying on for a mile or so and going off. So, I was prepared to replace the O2's this weekend. No biggy.

The other night, the usual: light on, light off. But, just before I crossed the Indiana line, the light came on and stayed on all the way home. I figured, "she'll get me through to the weekend."

I got up yesterday morning, jumped in the car, turned the key -- halfway through cranking, my hand slipped off the key at the point where the car usually starts. No prob, I thought, turned the key again -- crank, crank, crank -- no-start. I cranked again, and the battery began to drain. Hooked her up to my power pack, still no dice.

I ran in the house and grabbed the keys for "The Twin" and told the wife she'd have to slum and take the Caravan today. Cranked up the twin and was on my way. There is a place, on my way to work, where I have to make a hard right turn to get into traffic. Upon making this turn, it felt like a wheel was going to fall off. She was binding terribly. There has been no POWER light blinkage, so, I know the problem is not Duty Solenoid C. I decided to put her in FWD mode on the way home last night and, yes, binding was gone.

When I got home last night, I decided to run the code for "Patience" to confirm that she needed her O2's changed. The code flashed two long times and one short. "That's not an O2 sensor," I thought to myself. I checked the chart: Coolant Temperature Sensor.

It's a pisser when one of your "X's" is giving you trouble, but, when they're both needing something, it's a b--ch.

So now, on top of the front end work Patience needs, I need a Coolant Temp Sensor, and, what seems to be, some major rear end work on "Da Twin." I'm bummed.

Sounds rough! Maybe its time for a 5 speed swap?

Not quite yet. The Twin has a 2year old Suby Reman and Patience is on her 3rd year of an independent shop rebuild.

A rear end would be cheaper.

Randy, sorry you're having a hard time with both of them. But the coolant temp sensor is really not a problem - it's a $25 fix.

The other car's binding could still be caused by duty solenoid C even if the power light wasn't blinking. I thin kthe TCU has to see a problem a few times before it'll store the fault code. An example was when I tried unplugging the famed 'resistor.' My power light didn't blink until, I think, the third startup after that.

Good luck, dood. Give me a call if you have questions about the coolant temp sensor. It really is a piece of cake.

Randy,
Isn't this kind of stuff supposed to wait until late March to start showing up (don't you dare show up at Reading in a Caravan )

I ordered the sensor today. around 32.00 total (19.95 for the sensor). I paid 12+ bucks for 2nd day air. Didn't want it to get hung up for five days at the Chicago UPS Hub.

Looks like a piece of cake, but, if I have any trouble, you'll be the first one I'll call.

Good thing is, It's a good thing it's on top of the motor. I was trying to figure out how to get the sucker up the ramps to change the O2's, since it won't start.

Hi Randy, Sorry to hear about your twins problems. I always tell Sue, You couldn't own a new car for the little bit the SVX costs. And I say it very seriously and straight faced. Over and over again. Take care, BOBB
