I investigated a little and found this on
Joe Spitz's Outback page

Outback History

1995: The first Outback is a 1995 Legacy L wagon with special trim. This 1995 model is not the Outback as we know it.
1996: First year for the 'real' Outback. Also first year for the 2.5L engine, which in '96 runs on premium fuel and is only available with an automatic transmssion. The manual uses the 2.2L engine and has the hill holder clutch.

And this.

1996 Outback Specifications and options

2.2 liter, 135 hp, sequential multi-port fuel injected, single overhead cam boxer engine with Hill-holder clutch
economy: 23 city, 30 highway regular unleaded fuel

Automatic transmission:
2.5 Liter 155 hp, dual overhead cam, sequential multi-port fuel injected engine (new for 1996)

According to this the was no DOHC 2.2 or a 2.2 with an auto tranny.

Well Mike, I guess it was a 2.5......I could have sworn the it said EJ22 on the block.......but it did have 194,000 miles of grime in there, so mayby it was a EJ25 , it definately was a DOHC motor, that needed valve cover gaskets and I'm sure every other seal in the engine.

Thanks for the research Mike,

Sorry about the OBS, Huck. Just glad your wife is ok. That had to be one hell of a hit. I'm sure you'll end up with something nice to replace it with (car not wife ).

Will keep an eye out for it, I'd hate for her to be in pain for months, she's got two black eyes now, and they were swollen shut yesterday morning, not as bad swollen this morning...but darker

I hate to see her in pain like this....

Not yet. The important question is,( seems it's clearly his fault) are you one to take this guy for all he's worth, or are you just gona settle for the insurance money?

I'm not the type to take him for all he's worth, I'm more the "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you" kind of guy, that's why I did the 5-speed swap write up...it was something I wish someone had done for me, to open up some new options concerning the SVX tranny problems.

We will make sure Carol isn't going to have problems from now on before they quit paying for the Medical treatment.....but pain and suffering just builds character, not bank accounts….at least the way I was raised, anyway.

Ya know, I kinda knew that about you, but this kinda thing is a personal injery lawers wet dream. I'm not in the sewing frame of mind either, I'd walk over to make sure he was OK and if he was I'd punch him in the face for being an idiot.

Hi Huck

Just found and read the thread. Sorry to hear of your problems, and glad your Missus is not badly hurt. However, two black eyes is no woman's idea of eyeshadow, so do tell her we have all been thinking of her, and are glad she is OK otherwise.

Keep your eyes and ears and options open. I am on your side as regards litigation happy, but you know, when your wife is innocent and not at fault, there is a principle involved in punitive damage.

My advice, talk to a lawyer you can trust before the trail goes cold. Stupidity, particularly dangerous stupidity, should not go unpunished.

Joe
