bought a rebuilt front axle
for those of you with a bad front CV just thought I'd relate that I picked up a complete rebuilt axle from Advance/Discount Auto Parts (they merged into one brand recently).
Anyway, cost me 69.99 plus a 40.00 refundable core charge including shipping and a Lifetime warranty. Whichever rebuilder they use also included a new axle nut and spring pin, that was nice (especially since I had forgotten to order them with the axle). Looks good as new and took 3 days to my local store in Florida from Memphis. FYI, They told me 3 more were in stock at the Memphis warehouse. |

Axle from Advance
Be careful! The one that was on my Brat came from there. When I went to replace the DOJ boot I found that it had been rebuilt with a 3 bearing set up not the 5 or 6 that the original had. Also, the portion which the boot went on closest to the tranny was different and had groves in it so you couldn't replace the boot. If something went bad the whole axle needed to be replaced.

I agree they aren't always a high quality source, but I've seen the axle when I pulled/replaced my tranny, it looks right anyway.
And since the whole axle has a lifetime warranty, and I have a local person whose throat I can put my hands around..... |
