Tranny temp trivia

This morning, at 16F, from a stone-cold start in my unheated garage, it took my car's transmission 1.2 miles @ approximately 45 MPH to reach 50 degrees and shift into fourth. It never warmed enough for the TC to lock during my 12 mile run to the office.

Always happy to provide useless facts...

Do you have a extra cooler fitted. If so is it fitted before or after the radiator cooler?

Harvey.

About the transmission operation in cold weather. We have other members to provide us with useless facts

Harvey: I do have a mid-sized aux cooler (GVW capacity forgotton), located between the radiator and AC condensor, and plumbed in series following the radiator. It's a typical tube-and-fin model, mounted directly to the radiator with nylon connectors.

This morning at 15F it took nearer 1.5 miles to attain 4th.

Temps in the teens certainly aren't extraordinary here, but a bit below average for December. I've found that on most days, cool to moderate to outright blazing, the TC hooks-up dependably at or beyond the three-quarter point of my commute. I posted this observation not out of alarm, but simply to provide a measure against which others might wish to compare.

Yes this is how I thought it may have been connected. The radiator is bringing the ATF up to temp, only to have the air cooler cool it back down again. It would be better for the air cooler to be connected, in series before the radiator. This allows the aircooler to remove the high heat, and the water cooler to stabilise the ATF temp to the desired 80c. Faster warm up, faster lock up.

Harvey.
