Dumb question?? fuel sending unit

Needed to purchase a sending unit to fix stuck gas gage. Knowing on most cars the intank fuel pump and sender are the same thing. I called the import salvage yard and told them I needed the sender. They sold me the fuel pump assy, but I noticed that it didn't have the "float" I had seen on domestic fuel pumps. he looked at another he had in stock and it was the same way. My question....don't laugh. Should there be a float as part of the fuel pump assy?? or does it measure the fuel amount another way??? I went to subaruparts.com and looked at the picture, but it wasn't clear if it had a float or not, and didn't list anythink seperate in the parts list...
