Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Gave it a long overdue hand-wash and greased the rear swaybar bushings.

I also spent a minute or two trying to figure out where my oil drip/leak is coming from. Then mentally calculated how much effort would be involved to fix the said leak(s) and quickly decided its not going to happen anytime soon while I have a toddler running around in the house

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Took the car to a window tint place I've used before, to get an estimate on doing the windows. Have an appt to get them done on the 12th. I'm going to have them do 5 on the stationary side glass and rear window, and do 50 on the roll-up side windows. The dark 5 tint on the side glass should really emphasize those smaller roll-up windows, and blend in nicely with the black car. I'll post pics when it's done...

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

It's been an interesting weekend. Finally replaced water temp sensor as the car had gotten very difficult to start when it had cooled overnight or had been sitting for a few days (thanks Tom for the diagnosis and part #). At first, after I finished and tried to start the car, the same issues were present: check engine light, multiple attempts to start and running rich on start up. I disconnected the battery overnight, reconnected and it fired right up. Now to see what happens this evening.
Also, had an odd problem. I have been using K&N oil filters on a number of vehicles over the years (2000 LR Disco, 2011 Forester XT and now the SVX). Tried to do an oil change after the temp sensor and the K&N filter (correct part no. HP-1004) did not want to thread. Had to switch to an STP filter which went on perfectly, but it was strange because I've never had that happen before. In any event, drove the car around a bit and nothing is leaking. Now I'm curious, has anyone else used K&N filters and ever had an issue with them? I don't use their air filters anymore, but the oil filters have been perfect up until this point....

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Once had a customer with a K&N oil filter on his WRX, and an engine oil leak.
After doing the valve covers and cleaning the excess oil away, he still had a slight leak, coming from inside of the welded on nut at the bottom of the filter. The one that K&N welds on the bottom so that you can use a socket. We put in a Purolator.

The one time I didn't put a Subaru blue filter on my STi it leaked. Bought them by the case from then on.

Alright, will most likely steer clear of using them in the future. Never lost a drop of oil from any of the filters, but this could have been much, much worse...

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I buy Mahle filters (whenever I get a sale alert) for all my cars. They are great but a little pricier than other options.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Before "phram" used the black covering on the bottom, I witnessed TWO orange filters, on Subaru's with pin holes on the body, I am guessing from road debris. It does not take long to drain your 5-7 quarts through a pinhole. Just saying.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Got the windows tinted today. The rear glass and stationary glass on the sides were done with a 5 tint (very dark), and the roll-up windows were done with a 50 tint (max here in VA). The dark tint on the stationary glass on the sides really emphasizes the roll-up windows, the tint shop took pictures of the car before I drove off in it.

I'm just wondering how long it will take before some sort of law enforcement authority pulls me over for having the dark tint on the "side" windows. This will be one of those instances where it will be subject to interpretation and discretion, but the actual roll-up windows are legally tinted, so we'll see how that goes, if and when it happens!

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

While replacing front BJ & CV boots I found the leak(s) from both engine sump and the gearbox sump + 1 in-hex allen bolt at lower front of engine.

In-hex bolts all now done up to 35 Nm

Engine sump 10 out of 12 bolts done up to 12 Nm (rear 2 will need to be done while on hoist).

Gearbox sump 8 out of 16 bolts done up to 12 NM (the rest I should have looked at when car was all in the air - so another hoist job)

But best news of all - I picked up a working headlight washer pump - from 1991 suzuki escudo - picture attached, filled it with WD40 for an hour and away she went as smooth as silk, just have to modify the 2 pin round connector (leaving it in place and adding a rectangular 2-pin to match the SVX loom).

Better to pay NZ$27 from Pick A Part than over NZ$140 for the same thing from local Subaru Shop - on back order.

It is going to be a great week - ......

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Tightened up all the sump bolts (engine and gearbox) as well as the in-hex lower bolts around the engine - nice before and after shots of the clean up.

While under the car I noticed that in the past some mechanic took off the heatshield (top and bottom) next to the gearbox ... so lucky I am off to the wreckers tomorrow for a couple of other items.

I think it was rattling because the front mounting point is missing - so at the wreckers I will take a nice hammer and chisel !!!
