So, if the clutch and flywheel (26.5 lbs for stock flywheel weight) weigh about the same as the torque converter and flex plate the weight savings should be about the difference between the automatic and the manual. Anyone have the actual 5 speed weight? Small Car Performance told me the whole set-up reduces the weight by 65 lbs. I would believe it saves closer to 100 lbs. but not 200 lbs.

I'll try and weigh one tonight
before the bride gets home. She takes a dim view of using the bathroom scale for garage affairs
I've moved enough of them around last weekend, I should know. They weigh enough to make my back hurt from hoisting one into and out of my VW wagon. Todd

Pulled a clandestine weighing
and some of you recent Stebro owners aren't going to be happy!
Stock muffler w/tips - 36.5 lbs Stebro muffler - 35 lbs Cable operated manual trans ('91 Legacy) - 119 lbs Hydraulic operated trans ('02 WRX) - 129 lbs Stock Legacy Outback flywheel - 23.5 pounds SVX hood - 48.5 lbs SVX wheel - 20 lbs I'll be building a comprehensive spreadsheet detailing SVX component weights in the near future. Next up; stock struts vs Ground Control coil-over/Koni struts. Todd

Todd,
I personally weighed the SVX wheels with the center hub & bolts about 3 years ago. It weighed 17.5 lbs. I posted this on the Yahoo site years ago.

Interesting. I've always heard from members weighing the wheels that they were 20 lbs, right on with Todd's.
Also saw a couple posts on Stebro vs. stock system weight though and it came out with a little more difference.

I also heard somewhere in an old thread here that the power seats weighed closer to 200 lbs. That seemed ludicrous to me at the time but 45 lbs -50 lbs seems rediculously light as well. Seems to me Sparco seats wouldn't save much weight at all.

they might not save much weight, but a little weight goes a long way, if you have 10 places in the car to remove just 5 lbs each you have removed 50 lbs, and every bit helps
you guys know about the 3000gt right, how they shortened up all the wires in the car to not have any slack and freed up like 70 lbs

Look in my locker under "Leather replacement project" and you'll see that I had the seats out and then into a hundred pieces too.
I was able to lift them up and out of the car, up a flight of stairs to my apartment at the time, etc, so I know they aren't 200 lbs (wish I was that strong though ). Next time I have them out I will weigh them just for reference though, maybe 40-50 is a bit light. Todd's spreadsheet sounds like a great idea.

Re: Practical Weight Reduction?
Hello,
I am doing this practical reduction to my car currently. Usdm92 model what is being converted into a european model. - power seatbelts to the manual versions - airbag - sound insulation from the floor, under seats, trunk. Perhaps from the roof too. - rear window wiper system/tank - wiring loom, i change aftermarket ecu for car and redo all the wiring. - cruise control unit, vacuum pump and cable what pulls it. Replacing it with modern solution. - trimming steering column and changing steering wheel to 3spoke one. - Plenty of more places too. Plenty of futile steel brackets. Goal would be drop about 200-300lbs off atleast of that 3550lbs |
