You're completely wrong. The GTO was a sales flop, why do you think they did a mild redesign it so quickly? There are STILL 25+ 2004 GTOs located within reasonable driving distance of my house, regardless of the 5k rebate and 5k GM card bonus theyre offering. It has little to nothing to do with the enhanced '05 coming out- they weren't selling like hotcakes before it was announced. Heres some Feb 05 numbers for ya.

Those are pretty damn bad, especially since they were selling them for fire sale prices.

perhaps a flaming chicken graphic on the hood and T-tops would entice the mullet-consumer into purchasing more GTO's. they just won't settle for anything other than a Trans Am or Camaro, though.

See again you are missing my point. I'm not going to try to argue that they sold A TON of GTOs. No way. My point is that after what happened to the F-body, GM knew well enough not to set their sights too high with the new GTO. The car was being produced at well under half capacity. You could call it an experiment maybe, but the bottom line is, they sold better than expected...because GM didn't expect too much. Now that the car sold decently, more money will be put into enhancing it.

Plain and simple.

If you read far enough into that link, the expected sales numbers are posted. 15,000 for 2005. That's half of what the minimum was for the f-bodies.

If the 04 GTO wasn't that good, hence the modifications to the 05 GTO, why did they even bother selling the 04 GTO? Why not put your resources and best product out during the initial year? This doesn't make sense.

Remember the Saturday Night live show with Willie Nelson? The running gag of the show was titled "The History of White Trash in America." In each segment someone would ask "What kind of car do you drive?" and the green toothed response was always "Trannnns Ammmm!"

GM marketing must have been so proud to have so squarely hit their target.

on a sidenote, i found that the mullet can also be referred to as the "Trans-Am." you can learn a lot on the intArweb.

They only had 18 months to make the Monaro a GTO, get it federalized and then to market. There simply wasnt enough time to do a whole lot.

So why not wait 30 months and have the first model be an 05 that is completely what they want it to be?

I guess that makes some sense. The tooling is set, the parts are there, Holden has already designed the car, so everything is set. Might as well sell some crap and then change it to the way you really want it later.

Perhaps GM is following the standard set by Microsoft: release crap, then gradually update it until its slightly better than crap. Underneath it all though, it's still crap.

Wow...imagine that...the world's largest automaker operating in a similiar fashion to the world's largest software maker. Perhaps we are learning what made them so huge to begin with? What makes sense is not always what makes money.

In 18 months, GM was able to take that car and make it street legal in the US, add a new motor, tweak the suspension and breaks, and change the looks enough to set it apart, then orchestrate a dramatic introduction months ahead of time. I'd say they did a good job considering all that. It took Subaru years and years to bring the SVX to market and they still screwed it up.
