Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

All,

It is snowing again. My question is this. If the car is stuck in reverse, can a flat bed tow truck safely drag the car from the rear tow hooks onto the bed? I need to get this to a garage with a lift, I think.

Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

I would say no, if its a 4WD then the center drive shaft needs to be disconnected before the front wheels are lifted (what about oil out of rear gearbox?).

Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

A slippery snow covered flat bed would work. The wheels would slid and no stress would be transmitted to the driveline. You could use dolleys also. Or being a skier I could suggest making some crud skis to put under the wheels.

Problem understood and appreciated.

Contact a reliable and trustworthy tow truck operator and discuss the problem with them.

In this part of the world operators are able to uplift locked and immobile cars including four wheel drives, without damage or a problem. Surely this applies your situation.

Tony as long as you are sure it is in reverse, and not park, without the engine running to produce line pressure, the whole box is in neutral. If it is in park the front wheels won’t turn.

Provided that he has not already done so, after making sure that the hand brake is not engaged, Tony should check and confirm that all four wheels move freely, otherwise his fears regarding towing the car remain valid.

You mean other than the corrosion build up on the rotors probably sticking to the pads?

If the car is in reverse and I put a fuse in the fuse slot that disables AWD, will the AWD be disengaged?

Other than the dash lights saying it is in reverse, I guess I have no other way to know for sure that it is in reverse.

But, yeah, a good tow company has to be able to solve this.

Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

Car was towed away this morning by the guy that is going to do the head gaskets. The car won't start because it is stuck in reverse. He disconnected the shift cable from the gear selector on the transmission and he could not get the gear selector on the tranny to move. The problem is there, not the cable. He is going to put it on a lift to try and see why the selector is seized. Any one see this before?

Also, on the gaskets, can anyone suggest where to buy head bolts? I ordered the Cometic gaskets today.

Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

there have been several subaru techs on here that have said used the head bolts over nothing wrong with them

See this thread:

Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

I had the engine in my 96 polo completely rebuilt, as a result of head gasket failure, at 125,000 miles. Tom Johnson of AWD, Inc. did a fantastic job and said basically the same thing.

Unless damaged or broken, there is no reason not to use the original studs. They were torqued maybe once in their life, when the engine was built. He has never had to use new studs in any of his rebuilds, including the infamous supercharged “shadow machine”

I guess the "torque to yield" is what has me concerned.

Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

Anyone know where I can get the selector switch (inhibitor switch?) on the tranny?

Will this work: https://parts.annapolissubaru.com/p/...1918AA000.html

Or this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1

Re: I am ready to blow this car up. Won't start now.

So the thing that had seized up was the selector switch itself. However, the cable also got damaged in the process. Does anyone have a shifter cable or know where I can get one?
