Rebuild question

Buying the new car kinda crashed my time table for my rebuild but I hope to get back to it soon. I was just curious about how you guys that have done it before did your pistons. I figured there was no way you would put the pistons back in the same way they came out if you have the block apart, the Subaru tech I know who lent me the tools said yes it has to be done that same way... Yet going through the shop manual I downloaded from this forum it clearly shows the rods and pistons bein assmembled as one piece on a press or something, so I was just wondering how you did it.
