5 speed/6 Speed

I heard that some people have tossed a 6 speed sti in a svx. was wondering whats the perks and flaws from a 5 speed and a 6 speed. By any chance is the a topic on here that goes in details on how they did a 5/6 speed swap with pics? trying to figure out if I should do the swap on my own or even if I can. I never work on tranny on cars or even AWD vehicles. so any info would help thankx in advanced

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

6spd should be bullet proof but expensive. 5 speed would be cheaper but not as strong

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

The 5-speed, also, has a better gear ratio. If your not planning any horse power increases the 5-speed will work just fine with an upgraded clutch. Make sure you get a newer WRX 5-speed, however. One benefit of the 6-speed along with strength is that the length of of the tranny is the same as the auto so you can use the stock shafts. with the 5-speed you need to have the center drive shaft lengthened. Some of the custom partsyou will need, you can buy from http://allwelldrive.net/index.html

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

wow, its alot more in depth than I imagined. The main thing I was looking for was the pro's vs the cons with the 5/6 speed. I had an idea that it would be a pain to do the swap but wanted to get an idea of what the benifits were with each tranny. I was originaly thinkin the 6 speed but I might not need it. I do plan on adding more HP, was looking in the 350-400WHP range. also been looking at different mods to see what would be right for my aplication. Thanks for your help so far

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

I dont mean I plan on doing it right away. I mean a long term project... like over a few years. First thing i want to do is tranny swap and then paint (couple of dings) and then start on the mods.

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

Darkness.

Can you expound on your 6 speed DCCD. Is the DCCD fully functional? Is it an OEM from Subaru?

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

i'm not too sure about the dccd in the car. i traded it in with a second svx for the car i'm driving now..wish i hadn't. but might not be a bad thing as the headgasket had just gone on the current owner (warranty manager at the dealership).

anyways..i bought the car with the swap in it. in all reality the price i paid for the car ( $8000) was the cost of doing the 6 speed swap (here in canada - and only one place does the job). so really it was in thought of getting the job done...but owning a second car from paying the same amount of money.

the place, Planet Motorsport, only uses jdm trannies...so the gear ratio is closer...this is why a USDM 6 speed tranny is more recommended on the swap, better gear ratio for the highway.

the dccd i couldn't say if it was the factory one or not...though i have a lot of doubts on it as there was a knob to turn as opposed to how it is in the STi's (dial style). i am also aware that there is a company/tuner here that also makes their own dccd controllers as well - Neetronics.

i personally didn't really know how to use the dccd, though i did have to ask the previous owner a few times on how to use it...the idea was to play around with it...obviously if it's set too much to the rear, then there was binding (in reverse i believe)...but i didnt' really play around with it. the dccd wasn't something i was looking for in the car/swap..but it was there when i bought it. i just left it at the setting the previous owner had it set at

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

Thanks for the info.

Not having a fully functional DCCD is my main reason for not doing a manual swap.

I just have this fear that the car would not perform correctly under a serious hazard situation such as dropping a wheel on to a soft shoulder at speed or entering a tight curve at too high a speed. Just can't get my mind around what nasty things could happen if there was too much power to the wrong wheels in a critical event.
