Agreed! This is the reason I'll have someone else do it for me so I don't look/feel like an idiot..

Re: Can I amplify keyfob signal?

Probably would have been better if you put the money towards this instead.

http://www.asianwolf.com/car-alarm-2009.html

This is a 2-way setup, so if you start the car it confirms it's running, or if the alarm is triggered it notifies you on the remote.

The range is incredible - I can be in the BACK of a store, and can still have the remote communicate with the car in the parking lot. - Ed

They are all telling the truth. It truly does like triple the range of the remote.

I trust you, but not your creepy gremlin avatar...

Addressing the "wolf" system Zman posted: I'm not sure about all that Zman.. It's like carrying a walky-talky with you all the time and they seem bulky and cumbersome.. Also, I can imagine it now, I'd be trying to sleep and something malfunctions and I wouldn't be able to shut anything off.. The proximity alarm seems awesome and I like the timed start up function.. But I don't know about it at all.. It's a great price for something like that but is it too cheap to be true?

Wow that really made me laugh!

The back story on the gremlin: Back like 5 years ago, there was a superstition going around here that when I touched a car it would cause the transmission to go bad. I was dubbed the 'transmission gremlin' and Landshark made the chop of my face on the gremlin figurine.

Re: Can I amplify keyfob signal?

LOL! It's much more hilarious when the story is told..

Ok, gremlin for the win!

EDIT: So I guess the end result is get another system or just deal with being close to the car before you mess with it..

Also, if anyone could find out the actual science behind this, I'd be very interested to read it.
The best pseudo-science I've heard is that the back of your skull acts as a reflector (much like a satellite dish) to direct more of the transmitter's output towards the car (right out your eye sockets and mouth!).

I think it works. I can remote-start my car from my office window w/ the car a good 200 yards away, and I'm pretty sure my chance of brain cancer is only like 5% higher, so it's totally worth it.

Re: Can I amplify keyfob signal?

So... I decided to try this out for myself cause the sped friend I mentioned above said it worked.. I went into the parking lot at work, instead of WalMart, and proceeded to press the button from all angles as I walked away from the car. Once I was too far for the button to work, I put the key fob to my chin... Knowing this wouldn't work, I was about to just walk to the car since it's cold out and to my astonishment and amazement, I believe I got the results everyone mentioned above!!

....This works...?

Re: Can I amplify keyfob signal?

It does work, although I find I get mixed results with my Viper alarm/starter.

In a strange twist, I caught a segment on TV just now about getting better range out of a car remote. Basically, it goes like this:

1. Open remote. Usually requires a thin wedge to be stuck in the crack and twisted, there may be a screw. (I don't have am OEM security system, so I don't know what the remotes are actually like)

2. Locate the antenna. It's a small raised square or cylinder and should be fairly obvious.

3. Carefully scuff the surface of the antenna with some medium grade sandpaper

4. Get a piece of wire (nothing special, everyday stuff) and contour it to fit inside the remote

5. Strip one end of the wire and solder it to the antenna.

6. Package everything away nicely, close 'er up, and try it out.

I'm going to try it out with my alarm. The range I get is pathetic (50' max, if I'm behind the car. Damn titanium oxide windshield...) and the chin trick doesn't always work for me. I opened up my remote to see what battery is in it, because I want to replace that too, and the antenna is very obvious. It's basically 4 button contacts, an LED, a battery, and the antenna.

Yeah that's the old one.. The new ones don't come with an antenna like the older ones have..
