Hello/please help ID this tranny and will it work with swap

hi ya'll, love the site, thanks for all the info. I live in the Portland, Oregon area and I purchased a one owner 86k mint pearl white 92 back in September. Long story short 9k miles later and after a week of plowing through deep snow during our christmas storm I cooked my transmission. I ordered a used japanese tranny off of ebay from "japaneseengines". Although i had them read the tz# to me and confirmed THAT tranny was an svx trans, they sent me an altogether different trans. This one ended up being a legacy trans. I d the tz# (TZ102Z1-AAA) and found a trans for sale in Australia from a 95 legacy. Can anyone help further identify this trans and is it suitable for the swap i've heard described? I found another SVX trans that will hopefully be installed today, but in the meantime i'm trying to decide whether to sell this tranny to a shop or to keep it in case i have further issues and do the swap should it fail again.

Thanks for your help,
David

Hi Dave, you will have to be careful about what trans you get. There are 3 different versions of the AWD Svx auto.

US has Transfer AWD, speed sensor in front diff, 3.5:1.
JDM has VTD AWD, speed sensor in front diff, 3.7:1.
Aust,UK has VTD AWD speed sensor in the box. 3.7:1.
All use different TCUs.

You have to use a US version, as the JDM/Aust/UK, won't fit.

Harvey.

Harvey-

I know that the VTD transmissions are physically longer. In theory, if you got the transmission, the TCU, and a shorter driveshaft, could the VTD setup be used on a US car? I've always wondered this.

Well most things are possibly Mike, it would depend on which VTD trans you used.
The Aust/UK needs different wiring to the front speed sensor, due to the different locations.
The best bet would be a JDM box, with the C solenoid changed for the unit out of the US Transfer box. That way you can still use the US TCU to drive the JDM VTD box. The only down side would be that the FWD fuse would turn off the VTD clutch and allow wheel spin.
If you used the JDM TCU, you would have the speed limited to 111 mph.

Re: Hello/please help ID this tranny and will it work with swap

Ok I apologize if my post was somehow confusing - but as I said I'm asking for help I'd'ing a LEGACY transmission. Per the tz number I provided in the original post, this is a LEGACY and not an svx tranny. Again, I'm trying to determine whether it is a 4.44 or a 4.11 as I'm having a problem figuring that out and this is a jdm part. The SVX tranny I'm putting in my svx is a US part.
Thanks for your help, and I'd appreciate if we could stay on topic.
Gracias.

Re: Hello/please help ID this tranny and will it work with swap

ok I searched the TZ# again and did some more research and in Australia that transmission matches with the EJ25, or the 2.5 liter, and those came with trannys that have 4.44 final ratio.
So what would the issues be involved with swapping it considering it is a jdm part?

All I can add Dave is that my Aust. 97 Liberty/Legacy 2.2 Auto has 4.11 and this No. TZ102ZGCAA.

A lot of the JDM cars are different from Aust.

Re: Hello/please help ID this tranny and will it work with swap

Thanks Harvey. I hear what you're saying.

It's a moot point at this point as I sold it to my mech to cover the shipping costs I lost. I can get 4.44 trans around here for cheap no problem and wouldn't have to worry about tcu compatability problems so I think i'll be better off.
