Jeff from Hodges Subaru called me about a half an hour ago. That's promising to begin with - I was going to give them until 6 before I started calling.

Anyway, they already have the car up on a lift. The tech working on my SVX owns and drives an SVX himself, apparently. This tech claims to have had exactly the same problem with his car. His recommendation is to drain the tranny, drop the pan and clean the filters out. Then flush.

Flushes scared me, so I had Jeff explain their process to me thoroughly. It sounds no more destructive than the transmission's normal operation, so I am reassured. The tech also claims that he has had exactly the same problem that I am with his car, and since fulshing he's driven his for two years with no problem.

If this is all I need, I'll be effing thrilled. So thrilled, I almost didn't censor that.

But I'm also keeping my feet on the ground. Lou at Ann Arbor Subaru said that this was not a solution to my problem. But then he didn't actually see the car.

More info as it becomes available...

Ah, yes, I forgot that for most people that works. Okay - let's try it.

Whaddya know - it worked.

Well, let's just say that it might have worked.

Jeff called a little while ago and told me that I could pick up my car tonight. The tech replaced the tranny filters, flushed it and hooked the stock cooler back up (I still question that one). Apparently, it 'drives much better than it did before.'

That's good, because before it didn't drive at all.

Anyway, I told Jeff that they're just awesome and he cautioned me. 'The real test is going to be every day use. It may just do it again.'

Everyday use, huh?

No, really, this is a bad week for every day use. Art fair is this week and art fair brings thousands upon thousands of people in to my down town.

That's right, my down town. They set up booths right outside my office, for crying out loud.

Our parking garage is more than completely full every day during art fair, so this week makes me nervous.

But, then, I have to make sure it'll get me to Lafayette.

Stay tuned. Same bat-forum, same bat-thread.

Thumbs up Good for you Nick!!!

I truly hope that was the problem with your car. Now the pressures on this MI boy to get his slapped together.

Keep us all informed!

You got it.

The car made the 65mi trip home with zero problems. I drove it to work today and noticed nothing unusual until I drove in to the parking garage.

Just the brake noise I heard before, nothing tranny-related. I'll grease the slides on the FL caliper tonight and we'll see what that does.

All in all, the car acts as it does before the problems, if not a little better.

The real question is: which of my tansmission's nine lives is it on?

Yeah. Considering the cost I was preparing myself for, under $200 was a pretty damned good deal.

I'm also very glad to have found another shop who would tell me, 'no, it's not the expensive thing you thought it was - it was just this simple little thing.' People who have the opportunity to rip me off, and don't...well, they're good people.

Congrats on the fix.

Hodges in Ferndale is a great Subaru Shop - I used them exclusively while I lived in Shelby Twp for 3+ years. Suby only and quite small but they knew the SVX very well. Kuoh or something like that was the mechanic that worked my SVX - Tranny Cooler kit at 32k, Wheel Bearings all around, along with regular maintenance kept the Subaru running along.

Let me into the garage to look over the car and had very detailed writeups on the work they performed. Great customer service.

Customer drop off service car - what else a Brat!

Wish you a safe trip down.

I just can't figger it !!!!!!

Geez Pockets, From your discription of the noise, I would have thought that the whole internals would have come out in the flush.
Anyway, alls well that ends well.
Harvey.

You're not kidding, Harvey. I thought that my 'Longest-Living Original Transmission' had finally bought it.

I make that claim without really knowing. If somebody else has more than 131k miles on their SVX, and the original transmission, please challenge me.

The car was repaired Monday, and it's still fine. I waited to push the car until today - I wanted to make sure it was going to stay fixed. A power mode run up an on-ramp this morning without a failure was reassuring.

That is great Ireally thought it was trashed because of the noise it was making. Did you get the external filter replaced?

Well. since you said please...
My 92's tranny hit 152k before it took a dirt nap, and I beat the bejeezuz outta it as often as I could.
That said, I hope the flush works and you run that tranny up to at least 220k - that's how long my 5spd lasted in my little red wagon (also beaten like a redheaded stepchild)
