Window washer not working

My front windshield washers aren't working and they're not clogged up with anything. I couldn't feel any pressure in the hoses going up along the hood into the sprayers. The pump motor isn't turining on when I pull the wiper lever forward. I checked the fuse and it's fine. When I got finished with my power steering o-ring, I sprayed the engine off with a hose becuase I spilt some fluid. Is it possible I damaged some wires going into the pump motor while spraying? I took a look at the wires going into the pump motor on the side of the washer fluid resevoir and they looked fine.
One other thing, I've been putting water in recently instead of washer fluid.
Thanks,
Dave.

You might want someone to turn on the washer while you look at the pump. See if it makes any noise when it is on. if no noise then try taking off the connetor and check for a voltage with a volt meter. That would eliminate wiring problems to the washer pump. If that all checks out then it might be a worn out pump/motor.

It won't work if you pull the lever forward. It'll only work if you push the button on the end of the stalk. -- I learned from experience.

I've had someone pull the lever while I tried to listen to the pump. I couldn't hear anything. Although the votage meter is a good idea after I take Ared's advice of pushing the button on the end of the lever. Funny thing is, I've always pulled it forward to wash, or so I thought. But I'll try it. Thanks.

I guess pure idiocy is what I get for drinking large quantities of beer in the hot sun : )
Thanks.

No wonder the ladies don't call you Davie!

Glad you got it sussed. BTW, we have no sun over here to cook our brains.
Summer is so rainy, I have taken to putting in neat alcohol instead of washer fluid, so I will have something nice to remember the summer by

I swear that I've never pushed that button since I've owned the car. I've always pulled the lever and it washed. Please believe me when I say that I'm sincerely sorry I wasted your time on this post though. "STUPID STUPID ME!!!!"

No waste of time for me.
Don't be so hard on yourself. We all make mistakes and learn from them.

The question remains:

Why was your washer going by pulling the lever!?!

He must have accidentally pushed the button on the end of the stalk while pulling it forward.

BTW, I still have a brand new replacement pump that I bought before discovering I needed to push the button. So, Davie, don't feel so bad. I just saved you a few bucks.

Oh, you think that's funny? Try this one: for years, I drove cars with the horn button on the end of the turn signal stalk. Every time I'd get in my wife's van, if someone cut me off or made a stupid driving move, I'd swear at them and squirt the windshield.

Well, if you must know, Mr. ENGLISH BUGGA , it was a 1980 Triumph Spitfire. The horn was also on the turn signal stalks of my 74 Mercury Capri.
