Re: my 92 legacy overheating
The coolant popping out on start-up and shut down is typical for this... Considering the gasket may have been comprimised and the head could have possibly been warped... I am on the same page as Jeff.

Re: my 92 legacy overheating
well, at least you know the torque sequence for the head bolts now.
i'd replace the bolts as well this time, they were probably tightened past their yield point, and are no longer usable. also don't forget to check if the heads are warped, torquing them out of order usually causes them to warp.

Re: my 92 legacy overheating
mind if I ask what torque values were used the first time??
Jeff is right, the head bolts stretch... When they are stretched past a certain point, they lose their spring. Tom |

the problem is that you used no torque spec so for all you know they were tigtend to 70ftlbs for one, and 120 for the other and you went out of sequence, which means combined with the fact, that you over torqued them, you almost certianly warped your heads. also don't lie, you don't know what they were torqued to unless you put them on with a torque wrench.

Re: my 92 legacy overheating
what do you meen dont lie? i didnt tighten them in the first place alright, and i say 60 lbs or so because when i tourqed bolts to 52 lbs i knew the feeling so i knew that some bolts were past 52 by far

Re: my 92 legacy overheating
hold... so you tighten the bolts in order to 52 ft/lbs and just left it at that?? There is a sequence to follow.
1. Tighten all bolts to 22 ft/lbs in order 2. Tighten all bolts to 51 ft/lbs in order 3. Loosen all bolts 180* in order 4. Loosen all bolts 180*in order 5. Tighten bolts 1 & 2 to 27 ft/lbs 6. Tighten bolts 3,4,5,6 to 14 ft/lbs 7. Tighten all bolts 90*in order 8. Tighten all bolts and additional 90*in order This is the kind of stuff you should know before you even think about replacing a head Tom |

Re: my 92 legacy overheating
I don't think you understand, You are going to need to have the heads checked and new gaskets fitted.
Future advice, don't dive into something until you have a decent understanding of the work involved Tom |
