All gears.. when it does this none of the gears forward or reverse work at all. But if I allow it to sit for awhile then they work again but only for a short period of time. And if I go up a hill then they go out too.
When you start the vehicle up there is a very very loud gear noise coming from the transmission area. It is loud enough you cant hear anything else. There is a rattling sound that goes along with the gear noise. When I put it into gear at times I can hear a poping clicking sound which reminds me of the sound a CV joint makes prior to it failing. At times when I first put it into gear the transmission thunks as if a transmission mount has failed and it allowing the transmission to move up and down making it hit the transmission tunnel. If you have ever had a rear main seal go out on a car with a manual transmission and the oil gets all over the clutch. Thats how the svx drives. You can get it moving but if you hit a hill then it slips. If you rev the engine up there is a very large chance it is going to slip and you wont move. That with the transmission noise. But the transmission fluid doesnt look or smell burnt. It appears to be normal. |

it almost sounds like your oil pump is just about dead. That might explain the noise and ticking as the drive slips and it also might explain the fact that it sounds like you have VERY low line pressure. Easy solution would be a trans replacement... Other idea is to pull it and try and find the issue. You said you do all the work yourself right?? Can you pull the trans and disassemble to find the problem??

Yes, I can pull it. In fact I pulled my FJ62 out of the garage and moved the SVX in this afternoon. I am going to put it up and jacks and begin the process of removing the engine and transmission. I have been talking this over with my wife and my brother and if I can get the money up I am going to buy an 1995 SVX LSI and swap everything over. I intend to go thru this LSI's transmission prior to installing it. I intend to use some of the ideas like in the performance transmission build thread.

well now i have a guy that wants to trade me some stuff for a wrecked 2001 Forester with AWD and a 5speed manual transmission. Hmmmm?
It still starts and drives. What do you guys think? Im almost tempted to use it to bring the SVX back to life and get the rear suspension cradle to convert it to AWD. |
