Oh...a tranny problem? No big deal, happens to alot of them really. There's many cheap and better-than-stock fixes for it

Or you could be lucky and just have a bad connector going to the transmission...
I had the same issue w/ our 92 Ebony when I bought it 3 years ago. I did a transmission flush, and blew compressed air thru the trans. cooler built into the radiator to reverse flush the cooler. This cooler (if original radiator) has a screen in the inlet that gets clogged up. If flow through this is restricted, it can cause the binding condition. Or maybe the tranny flush unstuck sol. valve "C"..
or the transfer clutches in the rear of the tranny.
Has held up now 3 yrs later.

Before you give up, take the car to one of the specialists recommended in a previous post, there is a real chance it is something less extreme than a new tran$mission...Best wishes for you and your new used car!

Where did you buy this car from, a Subaru dealer, or used car lot? What city?
Just curious. I have had two transmission rebuilds done on two different svx's in Montreal for around 2200.00

Cynic, I noticed you are also from Canada. If you are near Toronto there is an excellent Subaru repair facility in Guelph Ont. I have not personally used them but they come highly recommended by people who know from the Toronto Subaru Club. I believe it's Planet motorsports in Guelph. If you need to do a tranny swap they are another group (maybe closer) you might want to try.
Anything can be fixed and these cars are certainly worth fixing.
Good luck

Of course they do. Stealerships are notorious for inflated costs. Take it somewhere else for a new quote.

Ya, I'm liking this car more and more. I'm in BC on the west coast, so I'll need someone out here to give it a look over. Drove it at night for the first time...headlights seem weak, or is it just me? I noticed some posts about folks putting in new ones. Since I don't have an owner's manual yet, I'm just playing with her and reading this site to figure things out. The power light could have flashed for 16 times and I wouldn't have known what it was if not for you guys, so thanks in advance! (I called Subaru and they said it was just the car checking everything when I start her up-don't worry,no problem).
I've got a few people to call to find a mechanic who'll work on her.
Anyone here have contacts in BC?
Oh, bought it privately. Had it checked over by a mechanic who didn't detect the tranny problem even though he's worked on these before. Should he have found it when it was up on hoist? Or noticed it when he drove it?

Thanks for the help. Cyn

There are many things that might help in the How-To Docs. From checking codes, to detailing your interior. Good luck.

Does it only bind on low speed corners? If so, it could be as simple as a 5 cent O-ring on your power steering resevoir. That's what happened to me.

I don't mean to thread hijack, but Kelvin can you explain what you felt when you had your binding issue? Did you feel the bind in the wheel, a noise from the front end or what? I have an o-ring at home and haven't gotten around to doing this yet.

Going around low speed corners, the car shuddered and felt like it was binding. I felt awful, as I thought it was the center clutch binding up and releasing, but it turns out it was just the O-ring. You remove your PS fluid with a turkey baster, remove the power steering fluid reseviour with 2 bolts, then replace the O-ring between the resevior and the pump. Poof. Problem was solved.

Oh snap, when someone says "Canada" I immediately think the Toronto area... I've got lots of friends there... Darn, you're probably closer to me than you are to any of the real Gurus...

No offense to Earl. But I don't think he's done any transmission swaps at those repair meets.

Also, if someone knows of a west-coast transmission expert... that would be great. Seeing as I live out here and all and I don't think I could put enough funds together to fly somebody out...

I'm almost ready to do it...turkey baster is on my shelf in the garage...I need the torx screwdriver fitting though.

Ok let me ask a simple question. Let's say you have a binding problem as Cynic might have. What's the harm in doing nothing and just living with it vs a new transmission or major work. I don't have a binding problem so I don't know just how bad these binding problems you guys speak of are, but my philosophy when it comes to cars is to leave it unless I can't live with it or it is causing major damage elsewhere that will lead to bigger and more expensive problems down the road.
Thanks

If placing the FWD fuse eliminates the binding, the power steering's not the problem.

As to what binding can hurt, it stands to reason that U-joints and such would suffer, along with internal transmission components. I'd think it better to run in FWD. But I ain't no expert.

You guys are asking the questions I had. I'll be taking all this info to the mechanic...when I find one I trust? We have a new Mazda3, so it goes to the dealer, my volvo died a few months back, and I picked up a Chevy Sprint for nothing to get me around until I bought a car. My Volvo guy doesn't know enough about the SVX, and the Sprint can go to Canadian Tire for repairs, or we do them (I'll be putting in an alternator this week). But this new baby needs someone who knows...
