Well, you can always look into getting a diffrent subaru transmission for your svx. There are diffrent transmissions from legacys and early outbacks that are compatible, though once again, the final drive is diffrent, so rear diff has to be swapped as well. Many will say this is an improvment over factory Its very little extra work compared to swapping in a factory tranny
you could always look into a 5 speed swap, if time and budget allow. Im guessing they dont though, seeing as this car is your primary transportation Keep your eyes open for something, feel free to ask, ect. If your getting a new transmission from the vineland, NJ area, ask us first...there's a guy that has been ripping people off in that area. You could also offer your JDM tranny as a trade / sale. Im sure someone else would enjoy making a little project out of it

If a different rear and TCU are all you need it might be worth your while to try and track them down here. Our overseas members are a pleasure to deal with. You might be able to use a rear from a U.S. subaru if you do some homework.

How much do you think a rear diff and a tcu would run about?

I do not know about the cost for the TCU and rear.
The JMD trans is the same as the ones in UK and Australa. It is a much better AT then the US version as it has a center dif to drive the rear wheels. Not like the US version with center disk pack. It would be really neat to have this. However........... If you do this you will be the first. What an adventure!!! Eh? The quickiest cheapest way for you is to return and get yours rebuilt or get a Subaru reman. What isn't working on your broken AT?

I wouldn't mind helping you out here if you wanted... I would love to try and get the VTD box to work in a US svx... I can make a rear X-member and try to find an AUST or Euro TCU...

Hey Tom what do you think about the TCU talking with the ECU? Any difference there?
If I remember right the JMD AT gets lots of torque to the rear wheels more than 50% I think 70% or so and this can be locked in with the manual button. It's a rear wheel spinner Bugs me that Subaru couldn't sell the US verison to the rest of worlds demanding drivers.

It HAS been done before - One of the former UK members (Barry) fitted a UK trans to a USDM SVX. The UK trans is similar, but not identical, to the JDM trans.

What is different with the JDM? Will it put more torque to the rear wheels? Does it have a center diff?

For a car that didn't sell particularly well anywhere in the world, FHI certainly spent lots of needless cash putting this-'n-that into the SVX for home use or export to here-and-there. One would think they would develop ONE car and try to sell it in every market. Stocking parts for various country models must be a nightmare. Another lesson in what NOT to do when producing a car.

I actually have a very similar situation.
I recently bought a SVX. The previous owner had a company out here (SPD Tuning in Redondo Beach, CA) install a JDM transmission into the car. Shortly after buying the car, the transmission mount went out. I took it in to a transmission shop and they tried to fabricate an adapter bracket for the US mount but were unsuccessful. So, I need to find this part as well. The part numbers are 41022PA110 and 41022PA120. The US Subaru dealers can't get them of course. I did a yahoo search and found a place that looks like they sell used ones (in Japan of course). I'm going to call a dealer in Australia to see if they can get the part. If that doesn't work I'll try Japan. My wife speaks Japanese fairly well and we have a Japanese neighbor that can help out too. I'm not sure what all had to be done to get the trans in there working. I emailed Mike Shields at SPD Tuning to get more info. I'm sure they changed out the front axles, the driveshaft, and the rear diff internals. But I'm not sure what else. The cross-member is probably different too... Jim |

Just came across this thread.
I have a 97 JDM trans (according to No. on trans..) Is it correct that there is a diffferance in the JDM's And USDM (canada) trans. Should I just whip off the rear of the trans to check for the clutch pack.. OR??? Ian |
