I think that mpg is a rather crude mesurment for how much fuel is consumed. I mean, when idling, your pbviously going to get 0 mpg no matter how much fuel you actually use. As for fuel consumption while idling....I've left a car running overnight by accident once. The car was running for 14-16 hours, and consumed less than a quarter tank. So....if you spend 14-16 hours at a stoplight in say...a week...then I could easilly see the practicality of turning off.
All I know is if the 5 people in line infront of me turned their cars off, and had to restart before going at the green light, Somebody's horn would be blasting

I've eaked out close to 40mpg with mixed driving on my XT6 (when it was an fwd auto). Driving 55 vs 65 would be you're biggest savings after simply keeping off the gas pedal when accelerating. Suprise suprise in a hour drive you'd only loose about 6 minutes depending on what type of driving it is in that10mph. 75 to 55 is nearly 25% for fuel econmy on average. AC on when on the highway if necessary windows open around town to 45mph. When you know you're not gonna make a light coast (I'd put it in neutral but just taking your foot of the gas with the SVX tranny would do wonders). In most states its actually illegal to turn the car off at traffic lights and that ticket would be a lot of gas. My advice on the fish and chips is to get you're lazy a$$ out of the car, walk in and get you're fix!

QUOTE:

For most people, this argument will lead to the question, “I might save gas, but won’t this be hard on my car’s engine?” According to the Canadian Office of Energy Efficiency, shutting off and restarting your car shouldn’t be too much of a problem:

“Studies show that frequent restarting has little impact on engine parts such as the battery and starter motor.”

ENDQUOTE

Sorry but I don't care about my battery, or my starter in this case. Batteries are cheapish, and I have an extra starter.
What I do care about and what is cleverly NOT mentioned is the ENGINE itself!

For some reason I was under the impression that when you start a car
(most of them anyway) most of the oil is sitting in the pan, not oiling anything.
And since the oil pump isn't pumping there isn't any oil pressure.

Or at least that's what the Pennzoil commercials tell me.

I do agree that every little bit helps. Both in the wallet and for the planet. But I don't drive a 3500lb flat 6 AWD 140+ top speed monster for the mileage...or the planet.

lol. Ya, the planes I fly run on leaded fuel, without any sort of emmisions control system, so I'd be the wrong guy to preach environmental concerns.

Ugh, don't get me started on emission control systems in OTHER vehicles on the road(sky too I guess).
I've owned 5 cars that had an engine of 2 litres or less.
All of them had catalytic converters, mufflers, and some sort of EGR system.
So why can I go out and buy a 2 litre(or bigger) motorcycle with no cat, straight pipes for mufflers and no egr system and drive it up and down the street at 2 in the morning?

Having said that I'm not putting no stinkin cats on my Magna.

Oh wait...forget all of that...that hijack snuck up on me.

I agree. These facts seem lost on most folks. Around here I'm amazed by how people hammer the throttle when the light turns green... just to get to the next traffic light. Sorry; that's just stupid. Recently I decided to keep up with the flow at a light here in town and was astonished how hard I had to accelerate, relative to how I normally drive. Apparently most folks literally mat the gas. When did everyone start driving this way, and why?

When I head toward Atlanta I always resolve to set the cruise at a comfortable pace and leave it alone, knowing from experience I'd get 28-30 MPG, but alas, as the traffic builds it becomes necessary to exercise the gas pedal just to keep from getting run over.

What you agree with physics huh? LOL That coeffiecent of drag is the killer as you increase the speed of a vehicle. Anybody that has ever ridden a standard cycle without a screen at 55 and at 75 can attest to the power of air at those speeds. Instead of even thinking about doing something that will cause wear (although on a properly warmed up car it is minimal except to those starter brushes which are cheap anyways) and isn't the safest thing just slow down a bit you'll gain a ton more than by playing with the on off switch. Of course where you don't need to go through a drive thru park and go in. It really isn't that hard unless you have 5 little ones in the car!
