alternator/steering belt

if the alternator is bad, would that affect the steering as well? the battery is dead in the svx, i just had it replaced a couple months ago and was told that the alternator may be bad. i figured the belt was bad (which it was) and had that replaced. if it is the alternator, would it be better to rebuild or buy new?

A faulty alternator would not affect the steering pump, unless it had seized up and as a result caused the belt to wear and start slipping.

I gather you had the belt replaced a couple of months ago. A new belt can wear in and later become loose, it may now require adjusting.

You say the battery is dead. Did you leave anything switched on by mistake or a door open? Without further information the reason is impossible to predict. A properly rebuilt alternator would be fine, but N.B. properly, if it is proven to be the culprit.

Significant Technical Input
Did you have the crank dampener/pulley checked, as I mentioned in your last post regarding this same issue?

If you searched that issue as I suggested you would find posts that include pictures of bad crank pulleys. Slipping crank pulleys affect all belt driven devices as it is the power source, e.g. when it slips the alternator spins slower, the p/s pump spins slower, etc.
