A ? about making WHEELS...
I have a question and its probably way out there but here it goes. I work in a machine shop and have seen some awesome $hit come off of the machines...Can a set of wheels be made? What CNC machine does it take? What material? and does anyone actually have a program already or do I need to get the engineer to do one?
Please dont laugh at my lack of knowledge! All I am is the purchasing manager and warehouse manager.

hmmm a CNC lathe, and 4 HUGE hunks of Aluminum.....
Much cheaper to just buy a set....

We have 6 CNC lathes and getting another next week but I was just wondering because I can get the aluminum at a good price I am sure. If I had a program we could run it on a smaller scale and check it on the CMM we just got yesterday then do adjustments from there. Yes ....probably cheaper to buy them! (but so much fun to see something like this roll off the machine!

Water jet machines are making inroads into the custom rim arena...Chip Foose and others use them for one-off sets.

I've seen videos of it...
You start with a wheel blank and the center is cut from a disc as the others just mentioned. It only needs to be a huge cube if you are making it solid from scratch. Which you could use a three axis CNC to do and make a lighter wheel, but with water jet it takes much less time, and less risk of messing up the piece. You just need to come up with your design for the disc to cut in the WJ in a 30-45 degree sweep and rotate that design all around 360 to get it balanced. The disc is ussually set on a big square on what appears to be a motorcycle tire changer and a mig welder slides into a fixed position to run a single bead all the way around as the disc and wheel blank rotate, welding them together. The wheel is then flipped and the same thing happens on the other side without the square in place.
Hope that helps, I have no idea who makes the blanks, but I'm sure you'll find em with the same people who make the tables for welding em.
