It looks like the Volvo is only front wheel drive -- because that was the only wheel that was turning.

It was an awd volvo - must have had an open diff or just that the craptastic volvo/ford awd system is that bad.

also - they are both using the same type of tires.

Even on the new Volvo awd system (introduced on the S60R model), a front wheel must slip 1/7 of a rotation (in a low grip driving condition e.g. rain or snow) before the awd system kicks in. What Volvo doesn't understand is that at interstate speeds of 65+mph, even IF the system did kick in after 1/7 of a rotation, the car could already be heading into oncoming traffic or a guardrail!

They are arguing that it isn't a good comparison.

The goal of the test was to show that the Volvo's AWD doesn't work. They did this test on TopGear as well.

The only reason the Outback was in the video was to show that the hill could be conquered with a vehicle with working AWD.

Methinks not. The 4EAT/5EAT Subaru tranny is the most advanced awd system Subaru offers. Btw, the Legacy they used in that test had a 4EAT.
