Engine stuttering

OK i just went to the gas station to fill up and the car was running fine, no problems. Filled up and when I restarted the car she was idling funny. Went to pull away and there is NO power. I floor it and she craws away. Take it out of drive or any gear and the engine revs perfectly fine. WTF!??!?!?!?

I made it back to work and shut down and restarted but still same problem. It is like driving with a boat anchor dragin. The RPM's will not come up.

Any help on this would be good

Steve

I am not sure? Why would it have started right at start up, old gas still in line. Could be.

It finally kicked a code after 20 minutes. code 32 and 37. left and right O2 sensor. Sounds like a timing belt slip.

In this part of the world, shops will not gaurantee a Subaru timing belt job unless they replace the adjuster and this NOt as a means of extracting extra income. I have not seen this mentioned in threads, but I have seen belt jumping mentioned, something not common here. Could there be a relationship?

The timing looks perfect to me. All the marks line up. I did find the following.

1. the drive, Lt, side O2 sensor plug was a little loose.
2. I think there is a small exhaust leak on the driver side, manifold to first section.
3. The timing pickups are in good shape, the ones on the crankshaft.
4. Timing belt is good and tight, no signs of slippage.

I am trying to loosen that section to see if the donut gasket is damaged, but they used a impact on the nut. It is soaking now.

could timing be off by one tooth cause this much problems?

Steve

You appear to know exaclly what you are doing. Why doubt your own judgement? Not likely that the timing is out as you have checked it and one tooth should not result in that which you have described.

the timing being off by one tooth can cause that much problems... but diffrent ones... like your engine being VERY ANGRY AT ALL TIMES (rough)... all it takes is one tooth... usually 2 or more and they wont even run

I drove my SVX to work today after ;

1. tightening up the exhaust
2. reconnecting the Lt. O2 sensor
3. checked all vacuum lines on intake
4. crossing fingers and praying.

She drove better but still has a rough idle. drops to about 250, bounces to 1000 then back to 500 back up, back down. This happens for about 15 seconds before she settles down at around 500.

I will be ordering new exhaust gaskets but I am still scratching my ass on what to do next. The 32 and 36 code are still there even after clearing.

What else should I look for?

Steve

Steve, when you say "she settles down", could you be more specific. Have you properly checked the TPS ? What is code 36 ? My manual does not appear to list it.

Yes I ment code 37. Fingures are typing faster than my brain can think.

settling down means that the RPM's stayed at a constant RPM and not going from 500 to 250 to 1000 to 250 to ect.

I got the gasket and 2 nuts, fricken 20 bucks.

before you make a joke remember I am married, the wife has the first set.

OK the nuts are on and the ball bearings in order. Something is wrong which settles (not droops), but why?? You have not reported on the erectile condition of the TPS.

The TPS is fine and set at the correct voltage. I have always run it at .49 volts with the ignition on and motor not running. I will try to replace the gasket and nuts this weekend. We are selling our house and are in the middle of a deal, maybe.

I will update with further infomation as it developes.
