What the hell is this?
Alright so I emptied the oil from the front differential, and I find this stuck to the magnetic plug...
At first I thought it was a chipped gear tooth or something but looking at it closely it seems to be a tiny spring split in 3. Could this be a part from the differential itself or something somebody could have dropped inside? A lil background on the trany.. it is a Genuine Subaru remanufactured.. that came with the car when I bought it. Looks to have been replaced maybe 20 to 30 thousand miles prior. |

Looks like the a piece of a spring that hold the tension on the axle stub seals

I have the drivers axle off now (putting a new steering rack in) I'll take a look and see if the seals are in one piece tomorrow.

it is the seal's spring. Too small to be anything else. Crappy part is, you need to turn out the side plates to replace the seals which can throw off your ring/pinion alignment if not exactly to spec. Wish you all the best make sure you replace that seal or else it will leak

No, I asked him at the time of my "what the fook" reply. It could have been a spring that holds the differential onto the transmission for all I know about these cars..

Thanks for the help everyone I checked the driver side and that one is intact so it must be the other one, although I see no sing of an oil leak.
Tom...If I mark the plate on the diff and than unscrew it counting every full rotation until it comes off and than install it the same way lining up the marks, would i be ok, or do you know any other way of doing it?

just be sure you have the revolutions right and you should be ok. Do both sides while you are in there
