Thumbs up Svx rear diff size/designation?

Hi
Can someone please help?
I am looking for a little tech info re an SVX rear differential
I have found a 93 automatic SVX with a 3.7 lsd rear diff fitted
Can someone tell me if those diffs were designated with a name as such? I.e R160 R180 R200 etc?
Basically I’d like to know what the crown wheel size might be, as I’d like to try use the diff in my 240z if poss
Cheers

If it was a 3.7 rear end, i think it would be the r180, not the r160. Remeber Non U.S SVXs got r180s, while U.S. SVXs, got the 3.545 r160 rear end.

oh, that sounds better
The car is a uk car, but I can only assume it's an import? Can't say we get many of those cars over here
Is there an easy way to tell from an external measurement re the diff? Top to bottom say or width?
unfort I cant really go pulling it apart atm as it not mine unless I pay for it

btw, the diff housing does have some large cast in numbers/letters on its underside. Will they be of any help if I can post them up?

Externally the case on all Subaru rear diffs is identical other than the casting marks, but they don't designate the ratio.

On most models there is a tag/sticker on the rear cover that give the ratio. In the US, many Impreza's don't have this info on them though.

Luckily the diff ratio tag is present and is easily readable.
Deffo a 3.7 vlsd, has a few other numbers but I can't rem them off hand.

That's incorrect. oab_au (in Australia) checked the rear diff on his car, and its an R160 also. All the SVX rear diffs are viscous limited slip R160's.

900ss, if you want to verify that the diff you have is an R160, read this how-to post:

Here's the easiest way to tell the difference between the R160 and the R180 is to measure the distance between the upper two and/or lower two bolts on the aluminum cover. On the R160 the two bolts are about 2 3/8" apart and on the R180 they are about 3 1/4" apart. The R180 is wider but not really taller.

Easy when you know how lol

Thanks for all the help.

Deffo a 160 now me thinks

I'm actually finding out on NASIOC that the R160 diffs are pretty strong. Dug-e-fresh who has an '02 WRX that does the 1/4 in 11.3 @ 125mph says he's still on his original R160 diff with no issues. His car is making over 450 whp btw and he's done countless launches @ 5K rpms...

-Chike

P.S. However, I have heard of R160's breaking once cars are making 300whp+.

Yeah the r160 definityle arent weak, expecialey if it only takeing half the load, but i have heard of lots of WRXs blowing them up. Most say that as soon as you get wheel hop the diff is dead.

The R160 can take abuse for a while, but they won't last forever. Based on a few people I've talked with, the R160 can last about 70,000 miles of hard driving before it starts falling apart.
