Manual Tranny Question

Does anyone know what is the strongest, easyist to install 5mt is? Hydraulic or cable? Also one that has an LSD. Are there any other mods that have to be done, ie... shorten drive shaft, speedo cable or wire? What tranny and diff combo will bolt onto the svx with minimal modifications? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

If you are looking for strength, the late model WRX tranny (04+) is the strongest unmodified 5MT easily available. It has an open front diff and a weak viscous center diff. If you are looking for more LSD action, you'll need to install a stronger front or center diff. The WRX 5MT uses a hydraulic clutch, so its a little more work to install it.

How much do WRX trannys go for? I haven't seen a wrecked car around my area. Whats the max HP and TQ that the tranny will handle? If I did find a donar car, what parts will I need besides the obvious.....I have never done a all wheel drivetrain swap before. I'm kinda in the dark when it comes to toolin with Subaru's. Will the speedo still work with properly, I don't know if it's electric or cable driven.

Mr. Matt,
Given your apparent lack of knowledge regarding a 5MT swap, you are probably better off contacting one of the experienced 5/6MT swap gurus on this site directly instead of just asking a series of questions in this thread. Mr SubaFreak comes to mind as a good person to PM directly...

I appreciate the help man, but I'm a very mechanical person. Yeah I could go out rip everything out of a parts car, I just want to do everything right the first time so I don't have a work in progress. That's why I joined this network, because there are other people here that have ran into the problems I'm bound to experiance and I just want to know what I'm dealin with!

I think what SVXelerator is trying to say is that Jesse (Subafreak) can get you going on your 5MT mod a lot faster if you just PM or call him directly. You might also try checking out folks' Lockers (see the "Personal Lockers" link in the upper right hand corner of the site) for pictures of their work. Best of luck!

Not to blow you off, but if you do a search on this site, there is quite a bit you can figure out on your own. The essential parts for the 5MT hydraulic clutch swap are:

tranny
shift linkage
shift knob
shift boot
clutch slave cylinder
clutch master cylinder
clutch hydraulic line
clutch and pressure plate
flywheel
throwout out bearing and pilot bearing
pedal assembly
some sort custom of tranny crossmember
a longer driveshaft ('99 Legacy Outback will work or a modified SVX driveshaft will work)

To make it all work will require some welding and cutting of the firewall and the driveline tunnel. Depending on how nice of a job you want to do, you might want to include stiffer tranny and engine mounts and stiffer rear subframe mounts.

For the WRX 5MT, the speedo will work perfectly with no mods needed in that area.
