Sounds like maybe a TPS or IAC issue on yours, as yours isn't dieing when you put it in gear, but when you go to stop..... low fluid should not make the engine die, but will make the clutches slip, which is not good on the tranny for sure.
I'm definitely not the best 4EAT guy on here, so maybe someone else will chime in on it.

Thanks Huck, adding more fluid made the die issue go away, I have not experienced any clutch slippage, weird shifts or other tranny issues & as far as I know, per SOA, the tranny is the original never been rebuilt, I have been running Royal Purple syn since 1999

Re: Stalls when shifting into gears.

Mine almost stalled today in stop and go traffic - I had to lift the throttle just after depressing it.... The tranny temp light flickered when the engine almost died.... lack of line pressure?

Engine revs dipped down to maybe 200 rpm - as close to a stall you can get....

Tapani, I hope I'm wrong, sounds like you have tranny solenoid issues. Have a reputable tranny shop look at it. If you don't have one, do some research for a good shop in your area, a"good" shop will save you a bundle of gold

Re: Stalls when shifting into gears.

I hope so too

The stalling is engine management related in mine.

Interestingly enough, though, the ATF temp light flickers every time the engine tries to stall.

Yes Sir, quite sure. Interesting, isn't it?

If flickers everytime the engine tries to stall. The oil pressure light is the small "oil can" feature in lower part. This one is right next to the FWD light where the SVX shaped thing is on the left, higher up in the cluster and it says "AT OIL TEMP" .

Funny, eh? Maybe it is a "late JDM" thing .

Strange! There is no physical or psychological connection between the ATF temp light and the engine

This may be an electrical problem, that is causing the light, and the engine to respond together, but,,,,,,no idea.

Harvey.

Well, the light is on if the ignition is on and the engine is not running - TCU tells it to light up !

So, the TCU might think the engine is not running if the erev is below a defined value. On the other hand the TCU does throw a code if the erev dignal is missing..... this does not happen if it doesn't really stall....
