my dad got out of one. they said he was going 84 in a 55. the person that was going 84 was the guy passing us. So he told the judge that he used to work with and design radar detectors (which he did for the air force). And plus this was in the mitsubishi. He put on the ticket it was a 4 dr, but its a 2dr. The trooper was new, and the son of the chief of police here in town.

This thread has gotten really long, so maybe somebody's already pointed this out, but here you go anyway.

There are two signals transmitted from the GPS satellites, yes. One is civilian and one is for military use. The civilian band used to have something called 'selective availability' built into it. Basically, errors were intentionally added to the signal. You could see it when your receiver would suddenly report a weird speed or heading and then go back to normal. This was, as you suggested, so you couldn't buy a $100 GPS and mount it on a weapon.

Selective availabilty was disabled some time ago...I think in late 2000, but i may be way off there. Since then, my GPS receiver hasn't had those weird, momentary inaccuracies.

I can't speak for all, but that's not what I said, most speed limits are ligitimate, however driving significantly slower or faster than traffic, talking on cell phones yelling at the kids, or just not having a clue what you're doing is a bigger problem. I've been hit 3 times at 5-15MPH and almost a fourth, here's how it lays out:

1) Parked in a gas station lady drives right into my Jeep Cherokee as I'm fueling up, it was a '79 on a fullsize truck frame like an early wagoneer, the monster rubber bumper stops protected me.

2)Siting in trafic for 5 minutes waiting for an accident to clear and WHAM lady behind me is yelling at her kids so she nails the gas instead of the breaks, good thing I am towing my flatbed trailer, I take no damage, she loses all her radiators up front

3) Traffic stops and a kid who just got his motorcycle, a little 250, can't stop. He dumps it and slides under my bumper. I stop and talk to him, that was just inexperience and he learned from it and is probably a better rider now.

4)This is the one that really pissed me off, a worker turns left across 5 lanes of trafic and drives right into me, improper turn, not his right of way, and he said he didn't see me but I was right in front of him...

When you see an accident caused by excessive speed the driver was almost always doing something really stupid at the same time, speeds role is usually to make the accident more likley to happen or make the accident worse, this is not always the case but is a general rule of thumb.

Good ways to stay alive:

Don't speed excessivly

Get voice mail, if they can't leave a message then it probably wasn't important anyway

Don't change lanes rapidly or drive to slow or fast for traffic, if you're traveling slowly use the right lane

Don't get pissed at the other guy, it dosn't matter if it's his fault or he's an idiot, by losing your temper you become a bigger idiot.

Please feel free to add any other good tips you might have

Well here in R.I. the speed limits are B.S.. Everyroad is 25mph. Who the hell does 25mph?

Obviouly not every road is 25 but you know what I meen. Perfectly strait long wide roads with nary a house in site, 25mph?

Now I'm all for the 25mph "when flashing" limits in front of schools and all but for everyday main roads it should be at least 35mph. When I go to other states I find my myself driving really slow in spots becouse I think the speed limit is like 30 and it's actually 45. I hate R.I. and really wish I hadn't gotten stuck here, there are to many cops per area and there all to friggen bored.

That does sound like a problem, most main roads arround here are 30-40 in the city, when someone does something stupid the limit gets lowered but I can see a problem with 25, out of town the limit here is usually 55.

p.s. speed limits tend to have multiple purposes - make money for the local municipality, keep pedestrians safe (school children, elderly, etc.), regulate the flow of traffic. Having sat through local court sessions, I've actually heard state troopers comment - on the record - that "everyone" was going over the posted speed limit and that the person they ticketed was exceeding the limit in an unsafe manner (read this as the ticketed guy actually passed the trooper!)

I agree with you! Tell it like it is. Got a good laugh out of your reply.

And yes, I saw the Ca$h signature on the first post. He has a hard time knowing who he is on what board.

Thats just his Electronic Mulitple Personality Disorder (EMPS). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV page 1284), EMPS is a dieses that inflects thousands of those with an internet connection. These people will also electronically "cross-dress" if it helps them maintain a fantasy of being "all knowing" in a certain subjects. People with EMPS will often use foul language and name-calling in an attempt to redicule and degrade others in order to perserve their delusions of grandeur.

Bill (SVXride) Rob used to go by various nom de pleums here including Ca$h. He was banished for conduct unbecoming a member and returned under his new monicker.

Bill,

Great points! Officers also have the use of their own discretion while working. This is why Rob, young white male, was pulled over driving his low-slung sporty car while the woman driving the SUV was not. Is it profiling, YES. Is it done regularly, YES. I've avoided numerous tickets while traveling with my wife in a pack of vehicles at higher than legal velocities, while others were pulled over. My vehicles have tended to be conservative (green Passat VR6 sedan, black 300M, grey Amadeus wagon-Reading joke) and driven smoothly. One ticket in the last 9 years and I drive extensively in my job (30-50K/year since 1995!!!) and do not have a radar detector.

Officers also have a keen sense of attitude. If someone is less than honest, or get smart with them, they are more apt to issue a ticket. They read attitude as well. Some people just have something about them that ticks people off, or an unfavorable feeling. (séance?)
