'91 Legacy Sport

Okay, so the XT6 isn't the ideal communter car, and it's already giving me trouble: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...threadid=15045

So I decided to take a look around and see if there is anything cheap for sale. Right on my way home from work is a '91 Legacy Sport for $1K. Black, stick (which I really miss), loaded, 160Kmi. What I'm assuming is that the Legacy with be cheaper to maintain then the XT6, so long as the turbo doesn't go, and better on gas, too.

So my question for all the Subie techs is: Am I right in my assumptions, and is there anything I should be on the lookout for when I go take a look at it? I'm really interested in this car, everyone says it's the poor man's WRX. Plus it seems like it would be better for work, I've got a guy that has about 20 Legacys sitting in his back yard for parts, cheap.

Any opinions, good or bad, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Id just look out for the timing belt and water pump going bad, unless they have already been changed. You'll probably run into little problems that are gonna drive you mad. I'd at least take a test drive until it got nice and warm, and to test out all the little things like the heat and a/c. Also check all the fluids. just my .02

You may also want to check out the legacy central bbs website. I tried to pull up the site, but our network isn't cooperating. Just do a search on legacy central bbs and you'll find it. $1k sounds like a good price if it doesn't have any/many issues. Plus the 91's got the rear LSD (I want one!!). The fact that it's a stick would be great too.....as sometimes the autos have issues if not properly maintained. It's also a total sleeper which is what I love about mine. After I recover from her repair bill I'd like to modify it for a bit more power.

Nubs has a turbo wagon, so you may want to ask him if he has any advice as well. (mine's only been on the road just over a month after spending 2 months at the repair shop).....

Oh and as far as the gas mileage goes....well that all depends on how lead footed you are. Mine sux down gas if I have a heavy foot....(can't help it...I'm addicted to the phsssht sound....) I got about 27 mpg on a recent trip to Hampton Va, so that's not bad at all. IF you do a lot of city driving, it will be considerably less.....My lowest thus far was about 19 mpg on short trips.

Hope this helps!!

I drove a Legacy Turbo sedan before I bought my SVX. I really dug it.

160k means less than how the car was cared for. Our old '90 wagon was a neurotic mess and had to be nursed back to health. It had 150k on it. Our '95 Brighton wagon is in far better shape, at 145k, because it's been cared for. It's a sweetheart of a car.

But then, it also came from FL.

Damn...too late. Oh well, keep the advice coming, cause I'm still interested if the right one comes along again, or if the XT6 can't be repaired soon. Thanks again guys!

If you mean "Legacy Turbo" by "Legacy Sport" then that is a fantastic deal. The 5 speed model is very rare.

Yeah Mike, I meant Turbo. Everything I've seen on the turbo model lists the official name as Legacy Sport. And yeah, it was a hellava good deal, sucks I missed it. And the only other one I've seen for sale in ME was also sold last week. The second one was an auto wagon, though, not really what I want. Oh well...back to searching and working on the XT6.

Damn, you missed a good deal! The Legacy "Sport Sedan" is every bit as good as a WRX but better looking I still have to but mine back together someday, with 400hp. Seems the tranny and rearend are in my SVX and the motor parts are in my Loyal. They are just a reliable as a regular Legacy but with a few more hoses and such. As long as the turbos good it's a safe buy ( they can go for $800 and up). They are really fun to drive and look very unsuspecting.
