Question Tranny noises....

When i come to a stop in my SVX and i have the SVX in any forward gear it kinda ticks, you can even feel it. If i put it into "N" it will stop and if i pull it back into "D" it doesnt make the sound until i have moved some then reaply the brakes then the sound and vibration kinda feeling comes back..

Any ideas?

I really have no idea, but was thinking that maybe the rear mount is at fault. If it's in neutral, there's no side load??? and maybe there is in drive??? so it could be shaking on the mount.

again, no real idea, just something to check if somebody with experience doesn't jump in.

This is what I described here about a week ago... Beav said to check my vacuum hoses under the intake manifold... I haven't done it yet and I still have this same vibration that you are talking about.....

*edit (of course I have the vibration.... I haven't checked anything yet!!! doh!)

Tick,Tick,Tick.

This could be a crack in the flex plate that mounts the torque converter to the crankshaft?

A broken tranny mount usually manifests itself with a loud "thunk" when pulling out, in reverse, from a standing stop.

I have yet another brilliant idea for those of us who try to verbally describe automotive zoo noises. "Thunk, clank, tinkle, thud, whump, rata-tata, screech, etc., etc." could be represented by icons like smilies. We could then quickly relay those strange sounds to the group by a few keystrokes. Something between a Thunk & a Clank could be #/*, & we'd instantly know what part needed replacement!
Any suggestions for icons? I can't make smilies work from this computer.

Ron (better living through hair-brained ideas).

OK the mount could be the problem, if it is common to make noises while on the brakes at a stop. The when going in reverse i have heard #(thunk) but i always figured it was crap in my trunk cause my trunk if full of everything from parts, tools, to subs and bottles of ATF and oil.

Is there an easy way to figure out what is the problem, or would it need to be jacked up and have a close look at them all.

I don't know about easy, but take all the stuff out of the trunk and see if the noise is still there - wouldn't require jacking (but might require leasing storage space depending ).

Lee, that was going to be my "technical" suggestion also.

The "thunk" is the tranny flexing and bumping the underside of the car. It's quite distinct.
