See if slightly depressing the gas pedal makes it start faster. The auxilary air control is responsible for providing more air for a cold starting/running engine so that would be a good place to start, providing you have ruled out weak battery issues first.

Re: 1992 cold starting problems

I'd check/replace the coolant temp sensor, not the one wire one, but the other one, as it will cause cold start problems also...

Re: 1992 cold starting problems

The coolant temp sensor is pretty easy to get to. Here are directions that Hocrest gave me before I did mine:
"Not too bad, the only thing you need to remove to get access is the plastic H-6 Cover.

Standing on the drivers side, look under the the rear of the intake manifold, you'll see two sensors going into the coolant crossover. One sensor has one wire, that feeds the coolant temp gauge. The other has two wires, this one feeds the ECU, this is the one you want to change. to replace it, just unplug the connector and you'll need a deep socket (iirc 19mm or 3/4") to turn it out.

Make sure the car is cold, if it's hot the results when removing the sensor would be similiar to removing a rad cap on a hot engine."

Re: 1992 cold starting problems

OK solved the cold start issue; the lever/sensor that used to fit on the auto tranny to give gear position was not in the neutral position. as soon as i moved it to the neutral position it has started perfectly even on the coldest mornings.
Thanks
Clive

Re: 1992 cold starting problems

Hi Huck369, in your write up i think you call it the neutral safety switch, its a half moon piece of metal with a pivoting slider on it, and as you describe there is a neutral position indicator (thats how i found it)
Hope this helps as i read you removed yours

Yep, I removed mine on the SVX when I installed the 5-speed, and it starts perfect....
But my XT6 which I installed the EG33 into is REALLY hard to start when it's cold....but starts perfect after it's been warmed up.....it also has no Neutral Safety Switch, and is set up the same way my SVX is, so I haven't been able to figure it out...
