92 SVX Problem. Engine dies.

Howdy Gents,

I'm having a strange problem and thought I would check to see if any of you have an idea as to what is causing the problem. Car has always run great. Had air conditioning work done and have had nothing but problems ever since. The problem started as I drove it home from the shop. I'll just be driving along and the engine will die. Sometimes it will start right back up and go on for a while and then do it again. Other times it will start but die when you press the throttle. It will do this numerous times until you let it set for a few minutes then it will start right up and drive on down the road for an undetermined amount of time before it does it again. Sometimes it will go for several miles and others just a few feet. It starting to drive me crazy. It seems to have nothing to do with temperature because it will do it with engine cold or hot and the air on of off. Any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

First, id take it back.....obviously they are responsible for the problem. If thats not an option for some reason, then do you have a check engine light on?? Theres a self-test on your car that will guide you in the right direction (usually). The symptoms you are describing are indicative of the mass airflow sensor being faulty, but that usually throws a code and I dont see how an A/C repair could have done anything to it.

Re: 92 SVX Problem. Engine dies.

sounds a bit like it might be a fuel problem. There are some really bad services but this condition as a result of air conditioner service is beyond me... unless it was intentionally done.

Bummer

Check to be sure they didn't bump into the MAF plug. It sounds like you are losing signal somewhere along the line and since someone was under the hood they could have pushed it out by accident

Also things can just fail.
Especially electrical things.
Like the MAF.

Or a crank sensor.
Or a cam sensor.

But I'll bet its the MAF

Re: 92 SVX Problem. Engine dies.

Thanks guys,

I talked to the guy at the shop that recharged my air conditioner and he swears he touched nothing but the air components. He says he simply replaced o-rings and recharged the system. I have replaced fuel filter and the temperature coolant sensor and nether helped. I decided to removed the fuel pump and look for any possible contaminants blocking fuel flow or possible faulty pump but that didn't really seem logical as the problem was very intermittent. When I've had a fuel pump go bad before the problem was very constant. I like the MAF idea and will follow that avenue first. I believe I noticed a Check Engine Light on at times when trying to restart it. It doesn't stay on long though when it appears. The car simply dies and all the lights come on. I may even try replacing the MAF if the connection looks good. I have three identical cars so parts are plentiful. Again thanks, I'll let you know if that was the problem or not. Have a great day.

If this isn't a technical question, I don't know what is. We have different forum categories for a reason, guys.
