Question Running Rough

My SVX seems to be running more roughly than it used to. It's seeming to have a bit of trouble turning over some of the time. Like I have to crank for quite a while. And when it's first fired up it feels a bit like it wants to stall. It doesn't, but it does shake the whole care pretty good.

As soon as you give it gas it seems to calm down, until it comes back to idle. After about 5 minutes it pretty much settles down. Also, it seems to be somewhat low on power.

I changed out all the fluids, and re-checked that they're all at the right levels. I'd swapped out the water pump and had to take off the timing belt. I believe that I got it on correctly, but if I had it off by a tiny tiny bit could it cause these symptoms?? Or could that or the alternator belt being to tight cause it??

Thanks,
Matthew

the svx i just bought does the same exact thing. . . check your catalytic converters. . .

on mine the 3rd one got plugged up from old fuel that was in the vehicle from sitting at the dealership for 1+ yrs.

surprised none of you found out about it for as long as it sat there

I was eyeing it last summer and finally decided to take her this summer.

oh yeah. . . budfreak has replacement cats for $80 i think and shipping is $20

ok to answer your questions first... no if your timing belt was off a tooth it would run very rough and have little to no power at any engine speed... remember mechinical things are very consistant when they fail. if i alternator belt was too tight then the engine wouldnt run any diffrent (keeping in mind im excluding extreme cases) but one of the bearings for your pullies would fail prematurely. it sounds you could have any number of things wrong with your car so we can start with is your check engine light on?

Whoops, should have mentioned that. No, I'm not getting any kind of CEL, and the light does work.

The way I was told to test a catalytic converter at school is to get the car up to opperating temperature then check the temperature before and after the catalytic converter with a pyrometer. There is suppose to be a certain temperature difference between the two, but I can't remember how much it was. If I am wrong someone feel free to correct me.

Rough Idle w/ CEL

Gents,

Getting in on this thread a bit late but I was hoping that someone might have some good advice. I have a '95 L with 57k on the odometer and I am having a very similar issue.

The car is hard to turn over, (I recently changed out the battery for a Sears DieHard Gold) once it catches it runs roughly, both engine fans run and I have a CEL. If I try to push the accelerator before it warms up the engine sputters then stops. Once the car has a few minutes to warm up and I rev the engine a bit (3,000 RPM) the CEL starts to blink a couple times then goes off completely. The fans stop and the car drives normally.

If I park it and come back to it about an hour or so later its fine. However, if I park it for a few hours or more the car is back running rough.

Some important background on the car. The car is my "garage queen" and normally I put less than 1000 miles per year on it so it does do a lot of sitting around. She comes out only on sunny days in the summer. I am the first and only owner so I know that a vast majority of the car is stock as I have purposely not done an major modification.

Things that I have done: I just recently changed out the factory plugs with NGK Iridium plugs (it was running fine afterwards this problem came up several months after the plug install). I tried disconnecting the battery for a few days and reconnected it with no luck.

Its a '95 so I know I don't have OBD II so I can't have the guys at Autozone scan it. I can start changing more parts but I feel that the problem could be anywhere. I would appreciate any constructive advice that anyone could give. In the meantime I'm going to try putting in some Techron Injector Cleaner and see what that does.

Thanks!

Yoshi

Could well be bad gas, especially if it has ethanol added, such as in CT. You should use a fuel stabilizer such as "Stabil" in a garage queen. I would recommend you pull the codes, run the tank out and try some fresh fuel before anything else.

Has anyone pulled codes??

Ones I would guess would be the O2 sensors.
