Mystery noise diagnosis: Please help

Today my son's 92 pearlie began exhibiting a strange noise from the front of the car. Here are the symptoms;

When the car is in Drive or Reverse and idling (with the brake on) we hear a snapping/cracking/rapping noise. This noise is not rhythmic, but irregular and random.
Once you accelerate, the noise goes away. If the car is in Park, the noise is still there, only much less frequently. Once you start moving, the sounds goes away around 1500rpm.

It does not seem to be coming from the engine; we had a mechanic put a stethoscope to it and everything sounded normal. It almost sounds like heat shields when they cool down, only louder.

Fluids are good
Tranny shifts through all the gears; TC locks up. Power mode engages easily
No abnormal symptoms when driving.
No warning lights

The noise is seems to be coming from the rear of the engine/bellhousing/pre-cat area.

I'll post more symptoms as they come up. All help is appreciated

Flex plate

My flex plate was loose and sounded alot like that. Steve

thats cold Dave... But yeah it sounds like a loose flexplate...bolts are backed out a little

How different are the symptoms of a loose flexplate vs. a cracked flexplate?

Svxfiles told me I could tighten these bolts from on top of the engine to check it out. He will show me at his house on Sunday.

He also said while he has seen many cracked flexplates, he has never seen a loose one.

mine was loose in the teal when I got it. Could have just tightened them up if the trans wasn't shot. Symptoms of a loose one would be as you described... only at idle and once you accelerate, it goes away... because there is pressure on the TC bolts but when there isn't it will rattle... Will this car be at the challenge tomorrow?? If so I can do it or show u how and why it is doing this
