Yeah, not a good move. Even when I'm just doing something quick and not even getting under the car I throw the tire under the side at the nearest factory jack point.

I know you're not supposed to do that, but I bet more cars have fallen off of 'real' lifts than off of floor jacks (by either failing or rocking).
Cars do not fall off real lifts. If they did legal matters would be involved. There is no excuse for taking these risks. If you can't afford to purchase stands, use building blocks or whatever, but only with care and knowledge of the strength of the objects used.

When changing a wheel for the spare, place the spare tyre under the car at the lowest point. If the jack slips, say on uneven ground, the wheel and tyre may prevent damage and hold the car high enough for a second attempt.

I'll take that bet, you have to be real bad to drop a car on a lift.

I've seen the mess after it happened once (a serious genious in his friends shop), but at least once a year I see that a kid has died nearby under a car supported by a jack

You're really going to trust your life to an unconfirmed, arbitrary assumption like that?

Go get more jackstands and please don't get under your car when it's supported by a jack.

I have four 2 by 6 pieces about a foot long that I drive up on. Makes it easy to get the jack under with room to start pumping. Also I always use the subframe to place the jack stands and have had no problem with getting around under the car.

if someone could post pics of the appropriate places to jack up the car, and perhaps a picture of an svx properly set on stands that would speak a thousand words!

I know I have at least one pic somewhere at home of mine during the swap. I'll see when I get home.
