Good point Senor Pockets. Not having delt with them so much, owning RWD cars to this point, if the CV fails, what would happen? Loss of power to that wheel, or inability to drive? 'scuse the noobish qustions, but I'm on a steep learning curve

That looks to me more like the suspension failing.

The only axle I've seen fail completely was on a Legacy wagon with a burned out transfer clutch. When the front left axle let go completely, because the front diff is open like on the SVX, the car stopped moving.

We had to drive a total of about eleven hours to go pick up the car, its driver and passenger. It was a long day.

Honestly, you don't want to let the axle fail. I'm not advocating letting it go for too long - you do want to fix it ASAP. What I am saying is that if ASAP means 'next month,' it won't kill you.

Did I completely miss something in that video?

EDIT: Haha, I guess the video didn't load completely the first time...NOW i get it....But that can't be the CV...He would have had to lose the whole hub and suspension...

If you're paying someone to install thet the boot only would be foolish, by the time you pay for the boot and extra labor it will cost as much, or almost, as replacing the entire axle, I'm about to replace boots and grease in my VW because the CVs still look good, but I'm also droping a spare from my parts car under the back seat of course those are probably good for 800hp, just a little over built, I drove 400 miles on a bad joint, but it never completly let go.

What If I took a new boot, slit it, and clamped it on im place of the old torn one. It wouldn't be a complete fix, or a very good one, but might buy me some time on the CV. I don't have the know-how confidence on how to dissasemble the whole lot to put on a new boot nevermind axles...I again throw myself at the mercy of the group
You can buy kits like this with a seam and some sort of glue. I haven't used one since back in the mid 90's on a Loyale wagon.

They are not as good, nor will they last as long as a normal boot. But if you aren't going to fix it right, you might as well fix it wrong the right way...

Just a wild guess, someone rebuilt the rear end and didn't tighten a bolt or two, what a PITA. Do those have coil over shocks in the rear, or are they separate? A arm I could understand, but don't most new cars have trailing arm suspension now?

I posted the video because I was just trying to scare you

What actually happened to the STi was that his strut snapped.

The outcome would be the same though...you're not going anywhere because that axle will just spin.

That's why there's 3 others, right?

David, as interesting as that is, it really has no business in this thread. The outcome would not be the same. You might not be going anywhere, but there wouldn't be any damage like that.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't mean to imply that your wheel will fall off if the axle fails...just that when your axle breaks you're not going any further because the axle will just spin.

Exactly. But it sure is interesting when you take that axle out of the car.
