manual front wheel dive tranny?

Does anyone know if Subaru ever made a Front Wheel Drive Manual Transmission? And if so what is the name of it and where could I possibly buy one??

Thanks

Re: manual front wheel dive tranny?

hi in the USA subaru made 2and 4 wheel drive cars till 1996 model year when they decided to just sell AWD in the states ,if your looking for a trans to use
i dont know how well a lecacy 2wd one would hold up to the power of the svx ,fitting it against the engine isnt a problem
good luck

Re: manual front wheel dive tranny?

Though wondering why anyone would want to have just fwd as well.
Unless you happen to have a fwd only svx and don't want to add the rear diff?

Re: manual front wheel dive tranny?

It's a little more involved than just adding a diff, but it is possible.

Re: manual front wheel dive tranny?

You'd want an early Legacy FWD 5-Speed, as the early Impreza's FWD 5-Speed had a different spline for the axles, so they won't work with the SVX axles, the Legacy one should work with the SVX axles

Ditto but in 94 1/2 the imp went with the same spline count in the fwder as the lego. You could if needed to make your own axles but it would be a pain. A fwder SVX 5 speed wouldn't be my first choice but every fwd Subie I've driven has been a better car then the awd version of the same model.

Try for a turbo FWD 5 speed from a Loyale, early legacy, or XT. I had an 86 Turbo XT with a 5speed. Pretty fast little car.

Re: manual front wheel dive tranny?

Loyale and XT boxes will not fit.

You need a Legacy or Impreza one.

My guess is that Ben will say.
Less weight (true, about 90#s)
Less parasitic losses.(true)
Quicker accelleration.(if you have no wheelspin)
Better gas mileage(who cares)
More fun to tail out.
The parking brake is now a steering tool.
