EGR...

Code 34

When the check engine light comes on, ugly smoke comes out of the exaust.
What the heck is an EGR, where is the EGR... and... "Oh, Dear, what could the matter be"?

Re: EGR...

EGR = Exhaust gas recirculation. It's an emmisons thing that draws some exhaust from the right side exhaust manifold up through a tube (you can see it coming up behind the right injector stack), goes through a solonoid, and gets pumped into the intake manifold.

Re: EGR...

34 is for the EGR solenoid.

It looks like it is sticking open, keeping your EGR valve open when it shouldnt be, hence the exhaust smoke. Get a new solenoid and replace the old one, its under the pass side of the intake manifold.

Re: EGR...

SVXFiles replaced mine just recently. The part [EGR soleniod] was not expensive, but it was a few hours work to get to it. The manifold has to come off or at least be unbolted and lifted enough to access it. Fun, fun.

Re: EGR...

Yeah dealer item but get it online from one of the usual places, they run about 30- 40% off of dealer prices on average ive noticed.
