From what I read while looking for my SVX in November, it was the 300zx non turbo that was being compared to.

The Mitsu/Chrysler brother hood spawned the 90's terrors known as DSM's
Dimond Star Motors.

While not in direct competition with the SVX because of the price and lack of luxury (which is questionable because my 1995 gsx came with power leather, climate control, moonroof w/glass, cough*5-speed*cough), these were and are very fun cars to own. If you come around one at a decent price I suggest you pick it up, spend $600.00 in mods and be in the 13's.

You are exactly right, we have not read the manual only when something happens. Just found out about the windshield wipers and their "normal" and "winter" settings. Geez, you learn something new every day about this wonderful car. Am driving it to work today (ya ha) but I got 16 POWER flashes. Need to find out what that means.

It means you have a transmission trouble code due to an electrical fault or failure

Only wimps read the manual.

Your blinky Power light means a problem with the transmission, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

If you click into the How To section at the top of the page you will see this page:

Click on Diagnostic Codes to get to this page:

Now on this page you must click on Engine Codes and Instructions, and NOT How to Read Codes with pictures.

This is because Engine Codes downloads a Word Document which also has instructions how to query the TCU, the transmission computer.

Perform this test and let us know what you find out.

In this case the number 16 has no relevance, other than the fact that it blinks at 2 Hz or twice a second. The instruction says if the Power light blinks for 8 seconds, check out the TCU diagnostics.

Now you follow the procedure for querying the TCU faults memory that is shown on the page near the bottom. There are two ways of doing the test, one way for current problems, one way for previous problems. The current problems one is what you must perform.

To perform the TCU self diag test for EXISTING problems
1) Warm up engine by driving at speeds greater than 12mph.
2) Stop vehicle and turn ignition switch OFF.
3) Turn ignition switch ON and make sure POWER indicator lamp comes on.
4) Turn ignition switch OFF.
5) Move selector lever to D and turn manual switch ON.
6) Turn ignition switch ON.
7) Move selector lever to "3" and turn manual switch OFF.
8) Move selector level to "2" and turn manual switch ON.
9) Move selector lever to "1" and turn manual switch OFF.
10) Partially depress accelerator pedal (to turn idle switch off).
11) Check code as displayed on POWER light. Blinking once every 1/4sec is normal.



Just in case it is not obvious from this outline, you need the ATF oil warmed up as per instruction 1), and also you are being asked to turn the ignition on ONLY, no need to start the car engine, just the ignition, OK?

6) Watch blinky check engine light on dashboard. Count blinks. Long blinks = 10, Short blinks = 1.


Trouble codes:
11. Duty solenoid A
12. Duty solenoid B
13. Shift solenoid 3
14. Shift solenoid 2
15. Shift solenoid 1
21. ATF temp sensor
22. Atmospheric sensor
23. Engine revolution signal
24. Duty solenoid C
25. Engine torque control signal
31. Throttle sensor
32. Vehicle speed sensor 1
33. Vehicle speed sensor 2



Just for instance, one long blink followed by four short blinks will indicate 14.

As well as this, if you have more than one trouble code indications, it will blink them out one after the other, then repeat.

You are most welcome, and don't panic about it. The blinking means an electrical malfunction. Age and heat can degrade the sensors and the wiring looms connecting them. It could well be something simple.

Do the test, get the number and we will take it from there.

[You are lucky that you're not too far from Tom anyway if you should need expert technical help ]

I think the major snag one encounters when trying to find the SVX's competition is looking at the car from the wrong genre perspective. For instance- Mitsubishi Eclipe GSX. It's a logical comparison, based on the operating parameters (AWD, fairly powerful engines, etc.), but no one would ever mistake the Eclipse for a luxury car whereas the SVX was billed as such.

That's probably the reason the SVX did so poorly in sales yet is so loved in resale (by us): it doesn't really top the charts in any single catagory, but it manages to make the charts in nearly every catagory relevant to pleasurable driving (comfort, power, style, handling, etc.). You can find plenty of cars that surpass the SVX in one of these areas, but the SVX will fairly trump it in all of the others.

I doubt anyone cares, but just to clarify - the laser's were only available with AWD from the 92 model year on, after they removed the pop-up headlights. The rest of the DSM's were available with awd from the get-go.

Shooting for the competitors in the range of the SVX, id have to say it would have been the Acura Legend Coupe, 300ZX non-turbo 2+2, 3000GT SL/Stealth RT(not the TT), Lexus SC300/400 coupes. They were all similarly priced/equipped at the time, of the same basic size, weight, and power.

The car really had no direct competition if your considering AWD as one of the factors. Its was and still is a unique niche automobile, which is what makes them so interesting.
