Yes,

The 96-98 EARLY 4EATS work with our TCU's.

I now have a thread in my signature that should help.

alrighty, dam i found a great deal on a 99 with 40k on it.... tosses that idea out... looks like i might have to drive to LA(313 miles) to get my 97 outback tranny. If that guy doesnt have a matchin rear end anyone know of a source to find one(LSD of course)

I really am not trying to bring you down, but,

There are no LSD rear ends that fit our SVXi

You will have to swap out the LSD from the SVX and install it into the donor rear end, sorry.

The process is not that hard, but a little unpredictable.
In the thread in my signature, I explain how to do it, but,

Even with a properly set up rear differential, backlash of 0.0039-0.0079" and a correct and proper pattern, and good, fresh, clean, 85-95 oil in it, it should not, but might whine

I have three 4.44s in my driveway, and have built about 17-20 others, and could STILL build one that makes noise!

nice information... this caught my eye.

NOTE, if you are just upgrading as a mod, use your SVX torque converter.
If your transmission is bad, then your SVX torque converter is probably contaminated, and you can use an 96-98 Legacy Outback torque converter.
They have been used successfully in the past.
DO NOT USE an Impreza torque converter! (unless it came from a 2.5 RS)
It is probably far to small for SVX HP levels.

How would i check if the torque converter is contaminated? how much should a 96-98 Legacy Outback torque converter if the transmission i buy doesnt come with one... i am pricing everything out and worse case scenario i wanna be prepaired.

My rear end seems to whine under load, but it's really hard to tell until I get the exhaust finish and new rear bearings.

And I used the legacy torque converter and it works perfectly fine.

That is a 4.44. Not a bad find especially so close by. Good luck.
